Buying expansions

By Archie, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Hello, newbie here.

I didn't scour through the entirety of topics here, so pardon me if I'm asking something that's already been asked and/or answered.

Is there something of a "right way" of going about expanding this game? On the FFG's product page it states that the mythos packs require the matching deluxe expansion in order to be used, but do these mythos packs link together in some way (chronologically or otherwise)?

Thanks, in advance.

They do. Each deluxe starts a new campaign and each mythos pack contains a scenario that continues the campaign started in the matching deluxe. You can play the scenarios in standalone mode in whatever order you want, but you'll miss out on the campaign experience if you do (also later packs contain higher-level cards than early packs).

Yes, and no.

The only thing you need to play any deluxe is the core and the only thing you need to play a Mythos pack is the core and the matching deluxe. So for example, you can miss the Miskatonic Museum and still play Essex County express.

However, each cycle, starting with a Deluxe (2 scenarios) and followed by 6 mythos packs forms an 8-scenario-long story arc. You can play any scenario "standalone" (i.e. just by itself). However, I would very much advise you to play in order because the story is a big part of the game (at least for many players).

Once a new deluxe comes out, that deluxe and the following mythos packs are independent of any previous cylce. Thus, you can also start with Path to Carcosa (the next deluxe that is bound to come out in a couple of months) and miss the entire Dunwich cycle

Thanks for the swift replies!
