Immediately defeated vs Rune of the Phoenix on Quest Main Boss

By topacesteve, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello, we had a discussion with friends regarding the use of Rune of the Phoenix on Lair of Wyrm quests like, WHATS YOURS IS MINE or AT THE FORGE (ENCOUNTER 1)

Can we play Rune of the Phoenix to lengthen the life of the quests' main objectives? Du' Lak or the Shadow Dragons the OL has to protect?

Yes, nothing in the rules does prevent the OL to do that.

The sequence is:

1. damage is dealt
2. damage is suffered
3. figure is defeated
4. for heroes (and monsters in certain quests) : figure is knocked out

Rune of the Phoenix triggers in step 2.

And this is why Rune of the Phoenix rather makes Rise Again from the Magus deck redundant...

It is extremely useful in any Boss Monster scenario to the point that it shifts the difficulty of any such quest quite a lot.

It makes me really wish they would errata the Magus Cards, because it is overall one of the weakest decks in the game... ^^ ;

I agree about the Magus Cards.... 2 friends and i played the mini campaign Lair of Wyrm and so far i have lost all encounters due to such mistakes as not allowing me to use Rune of Phoenix on Du'Lak.

Of course all this situation led us to At the Forge final encounter but i plan to retribute with a swift stroke of combo : Dark Charm on Jorem Tolk (Move on Lava) - Burn - Web of Deception (change to Stun)

The thing with Jorem Tolk...

He is a very special case...
Because he counts as neither hero nor monster, there is actually a lot of stuff you cannot do to him, including monster abilities and overlord cards (aside from those that specifically deal with attacks)...

I really do not like the quest with him because of how confusing and weird those rules are...

I am thinking if I shall make some houserules for my own games to upgrade Magus (Both the Word of... Cards also need a buff), I am just not quite sure yet how it should work...
The issue is that it is non trivial to make them better but not end up also having to change a lot of other cards like Explosive runes...

Yes you are right, the strange thing with him is that in the Whats yours is Mine quest he can attack but he is not treated as a hero figure and cannot be targeted by Ol Cards but in the next quest (At the Forge) he cannot attack he has a defence die and the quest rules state that he can be targeted by OL Cards. He also has no fatigue value so Freezing would make him get hits. Very complex case this Jorem Tolk.

I think Word of Pain is decent against a Conjurer, but that's about it...

We did play What's Yours is Mine, but I don't recall ever targeting Jorem with a card... (Punisher + Basic 1), I think I mostly just bashed him with an errin.
