xXx Alpha Strike

By GreenDragoon, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys, I'd like to submit my own idea for a rebel alpha strike

Jess Pava (25)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
R2-D6 (1)
A Score to Settle (0)
Guidance Chips (0)

Wes Janson (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Plasma Torpedoes (3)
R3-A2 (2)
Guidance Chips (0)

Wedge Antilles (29)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Guidance Chips (0)

Total: 100

The idea is obvious:

Wes fires his plasma first, strips off tokens.
Wedge shoots himself with the protons against a -1green opponent
Then he allows Jess to fire at PS9. She can reroll 2, change 2 focus results to crit (ASTS+Proton) and one blank to crit (GC), which gives her an expected 2hits+2crits against a wounded and token-stripped target.

After the alpha strike I expect to be up a ship (or at worst equal), and all 3 are ok for the following dog fight.

Thoughts?

How does Jess acquire Target Lock?

I can see you changing one Proton to Plasma to give Jess Deadeye and make Jess to shoot before Wedge.

With her actions, the proton and ASTS will each change a focus to a crit, so she doesn't need to focus. She also has re-rolls and chips. So, she should be hitting 4 dice on the torp. It's a very solid alpha strike.

She is PS3, so is likely to move before opponent ships and then won't have a range to acquire target lock.

Possibly. that depends on your flying and predicting opponents movements. I agree that it's a lot more difficult with a low PS ship

Yes I thought about deadeye, too. ASTS might be overkill anyway, with the innate focus -> crit of protons.

what do you think about adaptability on Wes to scrape the point for deadeye?

This is a hindrance at best. Range control should net you a TL on approach.

Not against good pilots.

Deadeye on Jess over ASTS for sure. Helps in getting the torp off for sure. She already has the rerolls and with chips should still do good damage.

It's a solid list. but if that first engagement does not go well... your going to have an uphill battle.

Bingo!

Getting a target lock (meaning being in range 1-3 after you move) and having a shot (meaning them being in range 2-3 and arc after they move) is doable.

But Deadeye does make it a lot, lot easier!

More to the point; you've already got one [focus] to [critical] from Proton Torpedoes and one [any result] to [critical] from Guidance Chips. Do you really need a third dice modifier?

Jess should already be getting 2 criticals on a target that's already on fire; this way she can get her shot off reliably.

Note that Deadeye does have some weaknesses, though:

  • Deadeye doesn't lock you into a specific target, allowing your torpedo spread to be disrupted by Biggs.
  • It's a lot easier to strip someone of focus tokens (Palob Godahli, Veteran Instincts/Hotshot Copilot turrets) than target locks.

So if you think you're good enough to deal with the job of getting the target lock, go with what you've got.
