Jake and Intensity

5. At this point you are waiting to resolve two instances of, "If you do, flip this card." You flip it one time; now the dual card's Exhausted side is face up. The Exhausted side has a distinct card ability, and can only be flipped during the End Phase by spending a focus or evade token. You created a paradox in which two sides of the card have active conditions that must be met. The side of the card you interrupted says you have to flip this card, but y ou can't flip the Exhausted side without meeting the condition of the Exhausted side. If you can't completely resolve all of a card ability, then you aren't allowed to trigger that card ability.

Actually, I don't think there's anything that says you have to meet the card's conditions to flip, it's simply the only traditional way to get the opportunity.

I still don't think this works, but I don't think point five is the issue.

Nothing in the above sequence broke that rule.

Yes, guy from the Princess Bride, I get that you don't think "once" means one time. I can't help you with that.

Maybe you guys continue the rules question in the rules thread?

I can barely resist to point out how miaunderstood the once per opportunity rule is, but I must not say anyth...

Reviving this thread! I'm all about necro-bumps today.

I'm not going to get into the rules/timing stuff. I want to talk about whether or not PtL is objectively better than Intensity on Jake. I think it depends on how you fly Jake and who you fly him with. He's going to be an arc-dodger and go in for quick strikes then dash out, right? So why wouldn't it be fine to Focus->BR/Boost->Focus/Evade->Boost? Next turn you can pick any maneuver to get out of dodge, not limited to green, then focus->boost/BR and, if feasible, save the focus to flip Intensity back if you had to spend all of your tokens the previous turn. I get that you want the ability to take TL for attack mods for his missile, but after the missile, I don't know that you'd be taking a TL all that often anyway with his 2 dice attack.

I bring this up because I'm working on some changes to a Rebel Alpha list I've been running, swapping out Wedge for Jake. In this list, Airen can give Jake the TL he needs for the missile shot (more likely if I gave Jake Cruise missiles instead of Prockets)...or in the Procket scenario, provided Jake could get a target lock on his own, Airen could then give Jake his focus action to start his shenanigans with his ability + Intensity.

Captain Nym (Rebel) (30)

Autoblaster Turret (2)
Extra Munitions (2)

2 Primary, 4 health and no Reload for his single ordnance.

Jake is obsolete, get over it.

Still waiting for the rules lawyers to take up the cause of Jake getting both Focus and Evade from Intensity without ending up Exhausted.

Intensity: " After you perform a boost or barrel roll action, you may assign 1 focus or evade token to your ship. If you do, flip this card."

Jake: "After you perform a focus action or are assigned a focus token, you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action."

Since "If you do..." is a separate sentence, it can be interrupted by Jake's "After you perform..." leading to this sequence:

  1. Jake moves
  2. Jake Boosts
  3. Intensity drops free Focus [delayed flip 1]
  4. Jake interrupts with free Barrel Roll
  5. Intensity drops free Evade [flip 2]
  6. Resolve 2 flips, 1 to Exhausted, 1 back to Intensity

It seems correct until number 6.

Once you get to number 6, you flip the card once, then there is no more condition to be met. So in other words, once the card is on the other side, you have to obey the instructions on that side, cancelling out the last side as if it did not exist.

(I hope you are correct, the A-Wing is one of my favorite ships in the game. But I just don't see it.)

It's not like PTL, where you can create a nested loop off the "then" wording, designating that the other part of the text happens "after" the inner loop has finished.

You flip Intensity instantly, job done. Can't touch it again until the end of the Combat Phase.

I would swap Intensity for PTL (and especially so if you want to go with Cruise missile where you need a TL!) and the Homing missile to Harpoon missile.

Played against an Intensity Jake, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. He's not shabby at all, and in the right list, he can really shine. I think the main issue is Nym, but Nym's an issue for everyone.
