Sorry About The Mess: A PvP Tournament

By Richardbuxton, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Congratulations @awayputurwpn the system sure was broken by this experience!

We should collect some proposals for a new competition, if there are enough interested.

My first proposition is a very limited list of equipment. Basically the players choice of the most simple and least powerful weapon for each of Brawl, Melee, Ranged (Light) and Ranged (Heavy). Then the choice between the cheapest armour. No special equipment, no stim packs, no grenades.

How do sabers fit into this?

Training Saber? Training Stick? Ancient Sword?

I'd like to see a basic saber but perhaps with 1) breach removed? 2) breach needs advantage to trigger? 3) sabers just have pierce 2-6?

I'd like to see some teams. RPGs are made as team games, and it'd be cool to see 2-person teams squaring off against each other.

Rather than nerfing lightsabers, why not just have credits cost XP? Say...lose 10 XP to get 1,000 credits. Maybe introduce a cap. That way you can have cool gear but at the cost of skills & talents to use the gear.

If using the basic Ilum crustal that would be 90-100 xp for just one weapon, that seems slightly rough even for a weapon like a saber.

My intention was that all weapons would be nerfed, if all you can choose is a light blaster pistol or a carbine then also including a full Lightsaber would be out of balance.

the idea of xp for credits would be cool.

I guess Limited Ammo, Linked and Autofire should all be banned too if we want a really low equipment game.

Another possibility is to have ONLY Lightsabers, or at least completely ban any ranged weapon.

Pehaps go all UFC and have 'weight classes' as in we do ranged only rounds, melee only, saber only, pure fist fights ect

Ooh I like that. Every round is a different weapon, so you need to be really versatile.

I was meaning like melee only tournaments or something but that could be done as well.

Some of the arenas were pretty extreme. "+3 Setbacks for every check, and +3 Strain for any maneuver" or whatever. Some of that is good to diversify the playing field, but I think a lot of those set pieces should probably be rethought and limited in some way.

The issue with only low powered weapons is it then favours the really meaty characters. Brawn 4 or greater characters would dominate in being able to tank light blaster pistol shots like a champ. As much as Tanson was a glass cannon; his loadout was fairly sub optimal. (e.g. I never even fired the dueling pistol, and never once felt that the lancer was a decent alternative against cortosis builds. Furthermore, I didn't put on any mods to enhance blaster damage, the only one I took actually made my ability to duel wield worse. and the couple of grenades I did have were fairly situatial. Basically, there was a large number of things I could have done better. XD). Even then, I struggled greatly against builds that simply had ton's of soak. Tanson couldn't do any meaningful damage to bulk and was basically crushed. So all a low powered weapon format would do is change the posts. Talents would matter immensely.

Though yeah; category matches would be interesting. I think I could make it work. When we are building to fit in a more constrained meta, more balenced duelists could emerge without, say, having to worry about autofire. Or alternatively limiting things to certain book likes, completely excluding Edge and AoR when running an FnD tourney and so fourth, which completely removes a huge number of talents (deadly accuracy) and weapons that would usually take residence over everything else.

Furthermore; I really feel that even if we had just another tourney; I could make a LS duelist work. It's just about having the tools to keep a fight short and have movement enhancers to make distance an non-issue. Unfortunately, there's only one LS tree that can do that.

Limiting the actual numbers of characters in a general fight would also help. Like max attributes of 4 and max soak of 5 and such.

And no Cortosis!

Well...I never did get to fight Da Bulk! Exhibition match, @Nightone? Just to see exactly how badly you'll beat me?

Will gladly try to take you on!

What if we banned/removed the Destiny Point system? It’s basically the fuel for almost all the powers that smashed people, Damage adding, Coordination Dodge, dice flipping, etc etc.

The only serious problem is for Force Dice users who are then unable to use everything on the dice. If we did a FaD only tournament then we could bypass that rule for the force dice only

I kinda like the Destiny Point mechanics, but I dislike how random they can be for tournament play. Someone can get all the Destiny and then unload on their opponent, or just hoard them so that the opponent can't use them at all.

What arena should we use?

OH I definitely love the dp mechanic, but yeah it is a very random element that can be easily controlled.

Maybe everyone should start with a single of their type of DP and the roll only adds additional points.

OR

everyone has a single Destiny Point to spend each round? If you use it for your attack you can’t defend with it. Use it for Defence? your not using it to improve your Attack.

so the abilities are still there but you can’t add a characteristic worth of Damage and also use one of the defensive talents like Baleful Gaze or Djem So.

This has my vote.

Too strong. I would gladly use my standard attack to have Coordination Dodge every round.

Oh except Coordination Dodge would be like...almost unbeatable. I wouldn't care about forgoing any offensive power if I could just add 3 or more failures to every Combat check you make.
