Sorry About The Mess: A PvP Tournament

By Richardbuxton, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Anything that changes a manoeuvre to an incidental is powerful: jump up, resist disarm, swift, quick Draw,

I do agree a lot are situational and if everyone thinks a single common list would be better then I'm happy to go with that, Arrther will benefit either way I suspect.

I know it may be too late to implement this, but what about just awarding XP? After each fight, each participant gets something like 10 XP. I know that there's a lot of potential for improvement on my build, and this would be a way for participants to adjust for things they didn't think of in the initial build phase. (If we don't implement this for this tournament, might be worth looking at for future iterations.)

This is a brilliant idea. I think we bandied around a lot of ideas like that early on, and they didn't quite stick. I think it got lumped in with the notion of equipment repairs & replacements, critical injury healings, etc.

NPCs and beasts and such have been generally taken out of the arenas, just to make things more simple I think.

But what do you think the effect of authorities showing up would be?

The idea was to not have any third party that would then choose a side to ally with. If the effect t is a one time thing then it should be fine

as an example a herd of beasts rampaging through the scene could cause some damage, or a critical injury, or force a Coordination check to avoid being knocked prone.

definitely set the expectation and rules before they continue the fight

Question is: How much? 10xp?

10 sounds about right. You can't do too much with 5, but with 10 per fight you could either get a few decent talents/skills or bank it for a really good talent or skill rank after 2 or 3 fights.

And should victors get anything other than one victory point and a better starting position in the finals? I don't think so.

I agree. Too imbalancing to give them bonus XP for winning.

Ok, so unless anyone has a major objection all of the four losers in the first round now have 10 XP and spend.

Arrther is buying the Control: Damage upgrade for the Move Force Power...

Ill edit this new ruling into the first post.

OH okay...shouldn't the victors get some XP as well? Or are you thinking of this as a consolation prize only?

(I thought in your previous post that you meant the victors shouldn't get more XP than the losers, lol)

If we're gonna be doing it only a consolation prize, then perhaps we should keep it down around 5 XP instead of 10...?

Or we could advance everyone by 10 XP and give the losers their additional 5 XP "scar" talents as a consolation.

I'm just spitballing though.

What about 5 for victors, 10 for those who lost?

It's supposed to be something that by the end acts as a balance thing. Like adding ballast to a victor in a race before the start of the next race.

I like that suggestion. It gives the consummate victors a chance at advancing just a little after several matches, but for the losers it acts as a bit of a handicap.

My vote would be for 10 XP across the board (regardless or winning or losing), since so much of the victory comes down to dice rolls and terrain. (Example: I have a feeling the jungle is going to be none too kind to poor Pango this round.) It would just be a way for participants to adjust to shortcomings in their builds.

Yeah you have like 4 setbacks coming your way if you stay at Medium range!

I like the idea of shoring up our shortcomings. I have none that I can address for just 10 XP, but I also wouldn't turn my nose up at any amount! ;)

Quick question for you PVPers: Where did the list of new scenario rules end up (for the star destroyer hull, etc)? Curious to see some of those.

We never formalised them, they are being created at need. I'll probably put the best ideas together later on.

Is it that many? At any rate, @Richardbuxton , the PvP is your baby, so why don't you just make a call? How many XP do we get for winning and losing? And I think everyone will roll with it.

Thanks, although I definitely wouldn't be doing it on my own.

I feel like the original intention was to have a self balancing system to bring those who where struggling closer to the top. But I also think giving everyone a little to play with would be good:

Winner gets 5xp and a Victory Point.

Looser gets 10xp.

Feel free to add those to your characters now.

For future ideas I had thought we could do a Championship with a standard issue pack of gear, something like:

1 Blaster Pistol

1 Vibrosword

Padded Armour

3 Stim Packs

plus a small selection of interesting gear such as scanner goggles, synth rope etc.

Then everyone builds characters with an xp budget and no credits, it's about making the most with what you have rather than fon

Cool. Taking a 5-point rank of Grit from the Demolotionist tree.

PC list:

1: @Nightone with The Bulk (1 Point, 5xp)

2: @awayputurwpn with Grrwalryyhl (1 point, 5xp)

3: @Richardbuxton with Arrther (10xp)

4: @Darth Lectus with Cheevil Batt (10xp)

5: @Imperial Stormtrooper with Omega (10xp)

6: @SithArissa with Arissa (10xp)

7: @LordBritish with Tanson Stryder (1 Point, 5xp)

8: @SavageBob with Pango (1 Point, 5xp)

Please notate your xp spend at the bottom of your character sheet.

Guess I'll gain another 2 strain bringing me up to 15. What are we doing for matches that have already started? Should I just leave my strain at what it was previous and add extra after the heat or increase it now? @Richardbuxton

increase your maximum according to the purchased talent.

BTW No chances on my side, will keep the 5 EXP for later

Edited by Nightone

Yes but increasing a stat during an on going match might be bad form. Like playing MTG and adding 2 more plains to your deck in the middle of a game.
