Playing against total beginners

What I would recommend is to add squad points to their squad.

You could even pick the ship(s) and loadout for the added ships, either to make it better or to make it worse.

This happened in a tourney? Kid gloves are off.

Just be respectful. "Listen, it's a tournament so it's going to be really hard on the new guys. Don't expect anyone to go easy on you out here, but if you want I'll talk through what I'm doing as I'm doing it and remind you of some things if I catch it. Good luck."

Kinda agree with this assessment. I mean, if I just bought a tennis racquet today, what do I think is gonna happen in a game against McEnroe?

No, instead they should blow $101 dollars on a paper mache squadron first. Fly what you love, that's what's most important smarmy champion smile .

You ol' smoothie. :P

I build a 75 point list with simple ships take a long sip of beer and go about casual playing. Maybe relaxing enough that people think its fun to ask questions and learn about the game.

If i know im playing a newb, I usually bring a list without too many shenanigans. OL and the three named strikers is my fav now. Gives me a wide range of ps to teach them about blocking, arc dodging, and why they should go spend $14.99 on the F/O expansion asap. Also the ships are fragile, and makes newbs feel good when they land a crit on Sabaac, or get that awesom one shot kill on duchess.

Three T70s like Jess,Ello, and Poe are great as well. Tough, not OP, and simple abilities newbs can understand.

I never feel bad clobbering newbs, as i got lit up my first days out. Its a learning experience. Just make it a good one. NPE like Kylo crew should not be used on newbs.

Kylo is perfectly balanced, he's not broken. The Decimator has zero agility for crying out loud. It makes perfect sense that receiving a critical result when you still have shields counts as taking critical damage, it's right there in the rule book.

It does NOTHING against Determination. Haha, checkmate.

NPE?! Everything is subjective. What's next, you're going to tell me that the Beatles are a better band than Merzbow and that harsh noise doesn't take any talent? That's just like, your opinion bro.

I never said Kylo is broken, but for new players that dont know how it works, it is Negative Play Experience as its a crushing blow when they are just trying to learn the game.

"Oh you just spent $40 and bought Heroes of Resistance pack and flying Rey/Poe? Well guess what, Rey is not firing for the first two turns, then will get PS0 on the third turn, and die on the fourth turn before she fires again. Thanks for playing."

Not cool against beginners. Just like quad TLTs is not cool against beginners because they haven't grasped proper range control and end up in all four TLT ranges rather than just 1 or 2.

I drew a fresh player (6th game total or something) playing triple K-Wings once...he couldn't even hope to fathom bomb flight patterns. To be fair that is also true for many more experienced players (like the Palp-ace pro I went up against in the final match that split the Lambda away from his squishies instead of using it to block SLAM areas), but man did that feel dirty!

When I know I will face someone inexperienced outside of a tournament I try to come up with a janky list that teaches them something about possible interactions but doesn't wreck them.

You can't avoid that in a tournament you'll get smashed if you're a new player. You as the experienced player most likely can't soften that blow either, but talking them through the game helps I suppose.
