Engaging question

By Rafrox, in Runewars Rules Questions

Hi guys, simple question:

- If I walk backwards with my guys (group of Reanimates for example) and hit an enemy back as well, are we engaged and I can attack him as melee? Sounds a little bizarre a kind of back to back fight.

- Also if when squaring up my unit will touch another unit and it is not possible to full square up, shall I still consider that I am engaged? For example I touch a corner of an enemy, then try to square up but my unit is so huge that it would touch other units if trying to square up. So I do not square up but still engaged is it correct?

Thanks !

Go down to where it says rules expand that tab and click on the rules reference pdf. It will answer both of those questions for you.

It is just bizarre to think that a fight between the back of my troop and another troop can happen... looks like as thematic stuff get lost here

They're people, they can turn around. They also get hit harder if being flanked (front to rear), so they are at a disadvantage.

But they can also fight back to back what is absolutely weird!

has that happened in a game for you? I've never seen anything remotely near shifting backwards into an enemies rear happen (or be possible) Weird, yes, but highly unlikely I'd say.

If you're back to back with an enemy unit, something has gone wrong.

I was trying to maneuver my huge block of Reanimates and the enemy was passing behind me to try to reach another unit in my army... so I just walked backwards and flanked with his side what was bizarre but stopped him to move forward and engane with my archers...

why is it hard to believe that if a group of dudes is fully surrounded they wouldn't fight against all sides...?

Undead Joe: "Crap hey skeleton Bob we have enemies trying to attack Mike Bones and friends in the back they want to turn around and stab the flehies back in their fleshy bits!"

SKeleton Bob "NEGATIVE UNDEAD JOE YOU TELL MIKE BONES THAT HE NEEDS TO FACE FORWARD AND KEEP WAITING UNTIL HE GETS TO THE FRONT LINE WHEN EVERYONE ELSE DIES!!! HE CANNOT TURN AROUND AND STAB FLESHY BITS!"...

at least that is how I would see the whole you can't fight other sides going in a battle...

The problem is that there is a action for this and it is called "REFORM"... in a real war the army is supposed to reform...see the Spartans for example, depending from where the enemies came from the REFORM...they do not have men attacking front, left, right and back all the times...they reform as a unit to attack and this is bizarre in the game...so you see a Golem and you just decide that your left flank will engage with the back of the Golem and there will be a figh: my left flank against your back ... this is so weird in my opinion... also, if you think that they are all men for example and you have a tray 3 x 2 and your side is attacking you must imagine that all your men turned to that side that is attacking so now your formation will be 2 x 3 in my perspective, changing your Threat to 2 and depth to 3 since the war is happening at that side...

and you can reform, if you are engaged with multiple enemies you can still fight at all flanks. Or if you want you can choose to not reform, take the reroll hit and just keep hitting them at a disadvantage... unfortunately the scenario you describe of changing the threat and ranks hits on a balance issue...and it would make certain builds pointless in lieu of wonky maneuvering. Also this isn't a "real war" and these aren't Spartans. This is a game and games are based around balanced mechanics...

I take it back. Nice move.

I don't think it's bizarre at all. Your rear rank can turn around and fight that way, it's just not ideal. If the enemy reforms to flank you properly, you'll take far more casualties than you would have otherwise.
