Who's Next?

By Asako Michi, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

So far we have Crane, Lion, Dragon, and Crab revealed for us. The upcoming #L5RLive stream tomorrow is locked in to show us some gameplay between the latest revealed clans, Dragon vs. Crab. I haven't seen any hints though as to what comes next. Maybe I'm just feeling a bit spoiled, since the vote between whether Dragon or Crab would be revealed first basically let us know well in advance who we get to see next. We only have 5 Wednesdays until Gen Con (including Trade Day on August 16th, so who knows if anything will be revealed that day or not...). Realistically, that means we can only rely on 2 more clan reveals before the big event(s).

So who comes next? I'm personally hoping it will be Phoenix, since we've had some mention of them already in the previously released fiction...and they're the one other clan I've been really interested in having revealed to try and decide which clan I want to play as. How about everyone else? Has there been some mention anywhere that escaped notice about who will be revealed next?

Unicorn. Unicorn. Unicorn. *prays*

I hope they skip ahead a week as I'm sure they want all the reveals done before Gencon.

Since technically we have that 5th Wednesday before the Gen Con events, I'm very curious to see if they might reveal the cards for the last clan *cough* Scorpion *cough* on that last Wednesday, instead of leading off with the fiction piece. And then the fiction piece might be revealed as part of one or more events AT Gen Con, maybe tying into whatever story-related prizes are provided.

Or, now hear me out, Scorpion is last, but FFG will not take the same 'route' on revealing them until GenCon, which would be both fitting for Scorpion and a "Surprise!" for all L5R players headed into the convention. ?

I'm glad I'm not the only one already looking ahead to which Clan is up next.... I kind of wish they'd got all the Crab spoilers out of the way in one go yesterday so that we might then have got a spoiler for one of the final 3 Clans today (I'm fairly sure the ink was still drying on the Dragon spoilers when 'Crab fortnight' was launched...).

Personally I'm really hoping we get Phoenix next. Then again, Scorpion and Unicorn were nos. two and three in my original 'wish list' at the start (which clearly went unheard), so it should be a win-win for me regardless of which clan comes next.

It'll be either Unicorn of Phoenix.

At some point I heard a rumor, if you can call it that, that Phoenix was mentioned at some point by the designers? I have no idea what the source is or if it's a legitimate thing that happened.

Either way, I'll be happy. I got what I wanted already :P.

I'm assuming you were waiting for Crab, given your Night's Watch avatar icon :)

I'd love the rumour that Phoenix are next to be true, however having seen the Dishonour theme in the Crab spoilers my gut feeling is that they might continue along those lines by previewing Scorpion next....

I'm starting to feel antsy. Unicorn and Phoenix are my favorite clans and I assume one of the two is next.

That being said, honor running isn't really my schtick and it seems that'll be Phoenix's game. And if Unicorn have a Doomseeker previewed I'll be back in purple in a heartbeat...

I think Phoenix will be next for the magic side, we've seen honor, attachments, military and defense/sacrifice, so magic would be a good next reveal, followed by Unicorn movement shenanigans and then the Scorpion in time for the release.

It also makes sense to save Scorpion for last, previewing the other six clans first instead, in the hopes of captivating newer fans with their varied gameplay and values rather than having everyone flock toward the "darker and edgier" breed of samurai. I describe the Scorpion thusly not to offend any who might be reading this of course, but simply to illustrate that in our cynical world there is a heightened attractiveness of the Underhand when detached from the larger context of the other Great Clans. It's also thematically appropriate to present how six clans each approach the concept of honor differently, before finally introducing the clan that has conceded its own honor in service of the Emperor.

Watch it be Scorpion, just to utterly throw off everyone's (mine included) expectations that they'll be last.

While I REALLY want to see Phoenix next...deep down inside I would be happy with that as well. Because once our expectations are blown away, then it's just like "What are these crazy mfers going to do next!?"

Iiiiiiit's Phoenix.

EDIT: While not originally shared there (I spotted it on Facebook, where the proper source is credited), shameless plug for the embryonic Phoenix forums.

I'm very curious where FFG will take the Phoenix in terms of design. One of the clans that was unfocused for large stretches of the CCG. However, during the times when they were focused they had top calibre decks. Just very inconsistent in getting there. Things I will be on the lookout for:

1. The Shiba bushi design - Will the Phoenix finally have Shiba bushi that can stand on their own?

2. Shugenja and Bushi synergy. A deck type AEG never got right, IMO.

3. Will they be good in court? Courtiers, high political skill level etc...

4. Will there be a focus for the Asako? Monks/Courtiers/Inquisitor Shugenja etc...

5. Art direction: Like the look of Shiba Peacemaker, not for Isawa Masahiro. Looking for more of grounded feel to the clan.

Sure they did. In Emperor Edition. For the friggin' Lion. That Kitsu honor deck always felt like the best Shiba/Isawa deck ever. But yes, the Phoenix were less than well-served in this regard.

Snarky answer based on how AEG presented them in their story: No.

Real answer: Hopefully they're at least adequate.

Probably not right away.

I'm thinking Phoenix -> Unicorn -> Scorpion. The release schedule will escalate so that we will get all cards revealed at least BY Gencon, but I'm hoping the spoils are done for all clans 1 week ahead so we can play more before the first tournament. (I'm not going to be there :( but I want everyone to be represented best, and that means full card knowledge with a little time to develop some tech)

GAH that would kinda suck actually, as I might be content to print off a playset and start playing, and ignore the rest of the releases lol

FIIIIIIIIRE CHICKEEEEEEEENS!

Getting hyped!

And how. Every time they tried to do it (at least through Lotus) we ended up with samurai that were overpriced for their stats and abilities if you didn't have a shugenja, or were just at baseline with other clans' samurai if you did have a shugenja. It always felt like AEG was too worried about making overly powerful Samurai/Shugenja interactions for the Phoenix, and so everything was nerfed instead.

Hey, I want to throw out a wild theory about the Phoenix Clan Champion.

So far FFG has been doing lots of callbacks. For instance with Yokuni being a Shugenja Bush. Even though he seems more like a monk.

I think they are going to keep going.

WILDING THEORY : Shiba Ujimitsu originally was a misprint. I think that he will be a Clan champion. But I do not think he will cost five. I think he will have a power that calls back to him (aledgedly) duplicating himself or traveling super fast.

He may even not be unique.

Interesting point on the unique/non-unique Ujimitsu theory there: So far (other than Crane) each clan has only had three unique characters (which also means "named characters" so far.) Isawa Masahiro has been revealed, and Tsukune spoiled perhaps by accident, and we know there is art for an elderly shugenja with a name (Isawa Atsuko or something?) That would be three uniques, which would otherwise preclude Ujimitsu, unless he becomes the only non-unique but named card in the core set.

I'm not getting my hopes up for seeing a card for Ujimitsu, but it would be nice.

I am probably wrong, but I hope I am not.

The Phoenix fiction will tell us who is leading the clan. Having a cheap clan champion would set them apart from the rest of the great clans.

I think Ujimitsu will probably be a conflict Character, which would be a call back to his wonky mechanics. Probably not as big as the other Champions, to compensate for the surprise factor, and that's why Tsukune will be there as THE big dynasty character to make up for that.

Also, a five fate conflict character would be really difficult to surprise people with.

"Why are you banking five fate?"

"...no reason."
