Wave 11 Art

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Uploaded my Wave 11 Unboxing Videos and on one of them I had to stop and just kind of gush over how amazing the art is.... which really got me thinking about how awesome it's always been.

Honestly - FFG is able to get some amazing artists to do some truly incredible work for their games. I'm blown away so often that I think I've just grown to expect amazing art and I fear that when the bar is always set this high, that it feels normal.... But I wanted to just say a big THANK YOU to all the amazing artists (Some of which I believe read these forums). You guys and gals are really doing great work and making our games that much better! Keep up the good work!

With the exception of "Gold Squadron Pilot" the art has always been fairly good. (There are a couple of misses, but nothing like GSP) Every wave, the Art and models keep improving. (Some of the original ship designs are not the best, but that is not FFG's fault.) A lot of it I would not mind hanging on my wall.

Don't mention the Y-wing.

*aside* I mentioned it once but i think I got away with it,

Agreement

Amen.

I believe the rule is:

Do not mention that which cannot be unseen

The art on a lot of the new stuff is pretty great, I hope they are getting paid better than they used to: https://medium.com/@noahbradley/minimum-wage-artists-4f8e00024a4

That's bad. I would think art should be a profit-sharing type thing, like paying royalties to use a song. Movies pay a band money every time the movie is shown with their song in it, and I would think art should work the same way. That's why almost every Beatles song in a movie is a cover - they don't care about the one-time royalty to reuse the tune, but they want another band playing it so that they don't have to pay as high of a fee on each screening of the movie. So, instead of $100 per artwork (or $500 or $1000 for that matter) they should sign a deal where the artist gets some tiny fraction of the profit from each card being printed and sold.

For my response to Crabbok's original post, yeah, their art is awesome! I wish they had higher resolution pictures of it for their news articles, because I actually like saving those as my desktop screensavers, but they only work with a smaller screen (like the one on my Windows XP laptop or something). They should have higher resolution versions available for download like other companies (like LEGO for example) do!

Edit: just thought of something - perhaps they've started paying better, because the art's gotten better, and they also don't seem to treat the artists as much like minimum-wage, expendable, "don't let the door hit your aft on the way out" temps, because they've started giving artist credits on the bottom of their cards in the Destiny game.

Agreed!

I just watched your unboxing a few hours ago @Crabbok and you were wondering about the pilots. Fun fact; the PS 5 pilot (Lowhhrick) is actually a character from the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game :)

Good job by the way, I'm a subscriber and enjoy your content.

There is some awesome art to be sure!! Congrats artists!!!

Many of my favorites would make awesome screen savers or posters! ???

Deviant art has a lot of the art from the game. A few of the FFG artists have profiles

For Wallpaper, have you seen this?

Cool! I'm a little disappointed that Gaarkhan (from Imperial Assault) didn't show up as a crew! He's one of my favorite Wookiees. I'm hoping we get some of the Imperial Assault characters soon, since they seem to be adding the RPG characters.

Thanks Crabbok! Super cool.

I think I can see that some of these have had the art added to a bigger background and then used Paint 3D, Photoshop, Gimp, or something similar to add extra clouds/explosions, something I also did for my first (unfortunately rather amateurish) attempt at making custom cards:

While anatomically incorrect at least you can give Gold Squadron Pilot an "A" for effort. Unlike Juno Eclipse. That card art is just hideous. Otherwise the vast majority are good with some gorgeous ones - Tomax Bren always springs to mind as being beautiful.

Definitely far more hits than misses.

Most of the misses seem to be alt arts -- Derp Rendar, Green Goblin Hera, Telephone Bossk.

Agreed; most of the art is beautiful.

Unfortunately, the Omicron Group Pilot has always bugged me, plus a few other unmentionables.

Yup all of the art is why I love these games so much. The models, and the cards, and booklets... ALL DAT.

This is also why I used to get annoyed by (for the most part) tournament driven FAQ changes that make the lovely cards we got when we bought the goodies suddenly useless and no longer viable to be on the table.

Good thing I ignore most of the faq-crap now because it does not pertain to how I play the game. I hardly ever do the things that got the cards changed in the first place because I am not geeking the things to win a dam-turn-a-la-ment.
