Noobie's first (real) tournament. Need help!

Hello!

I'm about to play in my very first serious (16 players) local store tournament and I really really need some help or pointers to what to include in my squadron. I'm a super baby noob when it comes to X-Wing. Don't even know where to start. I'm trying to build a Scum squadron.

Would like to include the YV-666 ship, if it's any viable, since it was the first prize in a preconstructed noobie tournament, which I somehow managed to win :). (The Hound's Tooth expansion + a Z-95 Headhunter ship model.)

I can pretty much borrow any Scum ships and upgrades available, from my friend. If she happens to not have a particular ship, I can probably just buy it a the store.

The only restrictions for the tournament is:

Jumpmaster (ship) is banned (as usual)
Attanni Mindlink (upgrade) is banned (new)
Twin Laser Turret (upgrade) is banned (new)

Ps. If your squadron does NOT include any of the following pilots you'll get free coffee during the entire tournament:) :

Fenn Rau (Scum)
Biggs Darklighter (Rebel)
"Quickdraw" (Imperial)

Sounds like it'll be an enjoyable tournament.

All of the usual suspects are banned or discouraged, nice. If you want to use the YV, then pairing Bossk with Ketsu is pretty powerful. Ketsu with Gyros, title and K4 security droid; Bossk with Dengar, Boba Fett, 4-LOM or Zuckuss and then either missiles (swap Dengar and K4 over) or Mangler cannon.

When you say as usual, you mean at that specific store? Because banning cards for tournaments is a pretty rare experience, in my opinion... And not really a conducive way to support the player base.

Then again, I'm sure it's much easier to reach a consensus among 16 players, so maybe this was done with their input?

I just hate the idea that I put money into something that I'm being told I can't use (and I don't even use any of those cards). That, and, if anyone is ever planning on taking it to the next competitive level, it's really a disservice to them, as they're getting the wrong kind of practice.

... Sorry, I understand that's not the topic of the post. Just surprised. The free coffee bit is AWESOME, though, and I actually think that's a really fun way to address the issue.

The YV-666 has a number of builds that are pretty great, ranging from a cheap Slaver with Zuckuss, 4-LOM, and Dengar crews, or Bossk with some alternative crew (though Dengar may as well be stapled there in your meta).

A good partner might be a Shadowcaster, specifically Assaj with Latts Razzi crew & Push the Limit, possibly with Engine Upgrade if you can fit it. Your store has made this ship probably the top dog in the meta, honestly.

Not sure what'd be left over for points, but it's a solid start.

Thanks a lot for your replies. Seems like both your suggestions is pretty similar so that seems like an excellent start. Feels a bit easier aswell controlling only 2 ships. What missiles are the best for this setup? Should I take the Hound's Tooth - title?

Maybee the Shadow Caster will be the top dog, but a friend of mine was more concerned about bombs/mines and such. Don't know the names. Detonatorns? Bombletts? Maybee just him. I'm not that into the lingo yet.

As for the banning I really don't know the whole story. Guess it's only for this store. I'm a regular at the store, but not at the X-Wing scene. The tornament rules is directly translated from Swedish, but the Jumpmaster 5000 has been banned for the latest 2 tornaments as far as I can recall. The other 2 is new for this tournament.

As I understood it; both the regular players and the manager Marcus had pretty much aggreed on that thoose cards alone were making the meta very stagnant and boring. Always best in slot. At least here. Way too powerfull for their utility and cost. They'll continue to be banned until errata'ed. I know at least three players were somewhat upset about it, (the ones that extensivly used thoose ships), but I still saw their names on the attendee list so guess they got over it, or willing to try something else.

For scum I really like Kath Scarlet with tail gunner and fearless. I usually put on inertial dampners too for a set of brakes when needed. I think her rear arc would make a fine compliment to the Hound's nice arc. Two tough ships that could cover a nice area of the board together=:)

I was playing around with her and I actually liked her a lot. The only negative was that my friend she didn't had that ship to lend me. Just the pilot card. Don't know if I'm willing to spend that much money yet, considering how new I am to the game. But if I do get the chance I'll try her. Thanks for the help!

Ketsu/Bossk or Brobots could be powerful without Attanni,jumps, and TLTs to worry about.
