Deathfire and bombs

By Thormind, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi hability says: " When you reveal your maneuver dial or after you perform an action, you may perform a bomb Upgrade card action as a free action. "

Since only mines are action, does it mean he cant use his ability on bombs (like Ion or seismic)?

correct, since the normal bombs which are dropped after reveling your dial are not actions, they cannot be performed as a free action. If it simply said "after reveling your dial or after performing an action you can drop a bomb" you would be able to use either.

Deathfire's ability only applies to Bomb upgrades with the Action header. Currently those are Proximity Mine, Cluster Mine and Conner Net.

To be very clear, the game makes no distinction between "mines" and "bombs." Anything that is equippable in the bomb upgrade slot is considered a bomb.

FFG is clearly working with a theme in regards to what gets the Action header or not, but so far haven't made any effort to differentiate between the cards in a rules capacity.

I could see an eventual nerf to Sabine shaking that up a bit, though.

Yes its only ones with an action header.
Currently the only pilot that can drop any bomb is the tugboat top pilot guy that dumps any bomb out of his front when he backs up. HIS card specifically says "even with action header" so it covers everything, while Deathfire doesnt make that distinction.

…on reveal bombs you can already drop…on reveal…

After performing an action you'd be setting yourself up for damage as you'd still be in range one of it. So there are very few situations where you'd want to drop one after performing an action

Possibly why they aren't a part of his ability.

That being said, self-damage to try and push through clutch damage on an enemy isn't unheard of. Consider cards like Darth Vader crew, for example.

"Mad" bombers aren't called mad for nothing, after all.

That is basically the ability of "Genius".

While it doesnt apply to Deathfire unless you can block, dropping a bomb that will hurt you in order to hurt the enemy is a legitimate strategy.
Ive done it with Gammavets and Protonbombs. Deliberately went for the block, dropping a bomb and doing a 1bank. He bumps me, takes a faceup and bam doubledamage on a 2hp ship ftw. Worth taking one on me as well lol

Which is why Nym is going to be such a freakin problem....

Comes up a lot with Deathrain IME, especially now with Bomblet Generator.
