Talent sockets and career change

By jfmongrain, in WFRP Rules Questions

If I transit from a career that let me socket a type of talent (lets say reputation) to a new career where there is no such (reputation) socket type, can I still use my (reputation) talents?

Lets say a Thief transit to Thug, what happens? His reputation and focus is sudently gone?

Seems weird to me.

you can no longer use it except to socket to the party card, if there is an appropriate socket on that... trying to match talent sockets on a new career with the talents cards you currently own is one of the considerations a player has to make when changing career...

i.e. you go into a new career where you can get the most out of your skills and talents you already possess (a bit like life really, if you are lucky!)

Why is that annoying me? I may try to rule an extra "universal" socket that can only be used after completing a first career, and only to socket talents you already had in previous careers.

I find it kind of lame that you may loose a talent - I mean, you learned how to do something, why should you forget it because you are now trying to learn something else?

You don't forget it, you just don't get the opportunity to apply it in your new "job".

I'd be careful about house ruling too soon; i think we will see in future expansions more advanced careers with more options on the talents slots (3,4 or even more slots. We already have 1 with three slots). Also the faith and order talents are specific bonuses granted to those careers than can socket that type of talent. If a wizard goes off and becomes a thug for instance, the game has the in built restriction that the wizard can't apply their special talent in their new career, even though they can still cast spells, as well as the fluff GM controlled aspect that the renegade wizard is probably now hunted by the colleges and witch hunters. If you house rule something that allows someone to use talents that they can't socket, it may potentially break the inbuilt wizard talent restriction, unless you also house rule something about that too.

I personally don't think it is a big deal, the PC simply needs to choose a new career that is a good fit for their current career.

and remember, its going to cost you one advancement to buy a new talent to fit your new socket, so its not like you will need to invest a ton of time getting something to fit in that new space. but i agree with the above, the available talents are something that you need to consider when changing to a new career. if you have one you really like, then make sure you can use it after you change. also, look at your party sheet, if there is a spot for your talent there, just stick it on up and keep using it. non-exhausting talents are brutal on the party sheet.
