FFG We Need Acrylic Tokens and Tools!

By Forresto, in Star Wars: Armada

Wow that that title sounds...somewhat entitled.

Puns aside. I really would love to petition FFG to at least consider selling less fancy, but equally sturdy acrylic tokens and tools. I want to be able to play Armada when i'm eighty, that requires tools that can last that long, and while cardboard is fine for some time, after a while unless you are very careful they're going to fall apart. No third party to this date has really matched FFG in quality and accuracy and such tools are not tournament legal.

While I understand acrylic tokens and firing range tools are benefits of winning at tournaments whether local or national, I would like to give three sticking points.

1) Not everyone can handle a tournament environment whether for anxiety, being introverted, or other reasons that could derive from mental divergence.

2) Not everyone can go to tournaments whether for work, geography, or the ability to commute and transport lots of models.

3) Not everyone will place to get the tools or tokens unless its a generous store event.

So I propose to FFG, release:

1) An acrylic token pack that has maybe two tokens of each type for like $15

2) An acrylic defense token pack with two of each for $15

3) A pair of squadron range ruler/firing range stick for $15. Make them look basic, maybe one blue and one red for the factions and leave the cool ones for rewards at tourneys.

People would buy three of both token packs and at least one range ruler/firing range stick, which for my suggested prices amounts to $105! Which for what you get is still a lot better then third party and eBay prices where that would be one range stick from a tourney or alt art card. You're printing money at this point!

FFG, eventually a third party will match your quality and if you have nothing to provide me in this subject I will pay them lots of money. I would rather buy from you and support this game, so ease my ability to empty my wallet into your vast coffers FFG! Let me pay you, not them. Please produce acrylic token and measuring tool expansions we will buy them! This community will thrive years after FFG has stopped, god help us, producing Armada and selling it, give us the tools, that we will gladly buy from you, that will ease our enjoyment of the game for many years to come!

I saw your other post, and I'm almost tempted to look into making etched acrylic ship tokens.... I had similar issues of wear. My ISDs have been used so much they wobble in their base now.... Cardbaord just isn't going to hold up well to the humidity of my area.

Every cardboard piece and token in armada can be replaced by third party stuff so far EXCEPT the ship tokens. If we are asking ffg for acrylics so we can play until we are eighty then these should be first in the list. Unless they approve third parties to sell them. :)

Omg yes pls! :) I think translucent or opaque black would be good to keep to the colour scheme of the original ship tokens, and so that the dice colours and hull zones lines can stand out clearly.

To any ffg admin reading this, you have already made a premise to make such things as you have already provided plastic dials for xwing in an upgrade kit. Indeed the command dials in armada seem to be an improved measure from the xwing system. So please provide an upgrade kit for tokens(ship tokens!). Would gladly buy. Thank you :)

Well, they didn't make plastic dials as such. They made plastic *frames* for the dials.

They still need the cardboard.

In that sense, the X-Wing Upgrade Dial is... almost identical to the Armada Dial in the core set.

Acrylic ship tokens would be cool although they may also need to come with a new mount for the ships in question.

Opaque black precision surface etched then painted to match exactly. I don't see any reason why it can't be done. Surface etching is easy work. making a CnC file to match each token layout is just a matter of scanning and scaling. I've sent a message to a local producer to see what can be done.

The trick is matching the thickness, essentially.

I mean, even on my cardboards, I have some stands that barely press the cardboard, and some stands that really pressure-push into the same cardboard... And of course, Acrylic is not as compressible as cardboard is...

Many third parties already have, use your google foo if this is something you are serious about.

True enough, but I'm curious if that's a variance in stands or the cardboard itself? It would more sense that the cardboard has variances as such, plastic injection molding is a fairly precise way to fabricate plastic.

I was surprised myself - that's why I tested with the single piece of cardboard with multiple fittings... Still imprecise.

If that's the case, the stand landing (area where the top of the token interacts with the bottom of the stand) would have to be further modified to have an adjustable or self rectifying material. Perhaps lined with a hardened EVA foam or rubber to add friction at that area specifically.

for tokens n such. ebay... aroudn $60 will get you 5 of every command token. its cheaper than what you are proposing but they dont want to cheapen tournament rewards.

also tournaments for FFG are designed to give someone the opportunity to play 3 games. they are less about proving who is the bestest and more about providing an opportunity to play the game more than normally.

Lol, have you seen the picture of the various champ rulers they've been giving out? Maybe not as highly accurate as you suggest.

I have been asking for this since I started in X-wing. If FFG was smart, they would at the end of each year release a acrylic pack for that years prizes. If they e were nice, and also smart, they should take to doing what companies like Stoneblade Entertainment and White Wizard Games have done with their games (Ascension and Start Realms respectively) and release a package that had all the promo cards for that season/year. Why? TO MAKE ?! But they probably have some bantha pudu reason why they don't. But like the OP points out, I'm a server, I can't just take every weekend off to go to an event. I need my weekends to pay for my bills. Stupidly, perhaps ironically, I RUN the events for my FLGS for a few of their games, but I only get to participate if there's an odd number of players, and the extra content that is slated as tournament organizer discretion material is not enough to cover my contribution and give out some as door prizes. And I still won't get 'winner' material for the events I run. I am fortunate that for many games my play group has multi time winners who will thank me for running events by giving me extras of their winning prizes. But I'm just stuck. ?

Several folks sell the items you want online already and for toughly the same price. Some store tournments winners also sell their items on eBay

Yeah they do... At absolutely ridiculous prices and in extremely low supply. Go figure, supply and demand. And FFG just watched the money just skip through their fingers. I honestly have to laugh.

Well, yes and no.

Part of the demand for Tournament kits is based on their availability that way...

I know the overt competition for a lot of these things would be severely diminished if you could just "buy the whole pack" at the end of the year. Which would drop off actual tournament pack production...

I've found today, its tricky to get people to come to tournaments when there is not tournament packs on the prize sheet, and you're relying on 3rd party stuff...

Unless its really expensive third party stuff :(

Maarek stele tournament looked really good ?

Yes that. Presses my cardboard in and irks me because of the dent hahah.

Actually for plastic-to-plastic connectors how did y'all deal with them? Like if those shield pegs did not fit in the shield dial holes?

The Steele Open?

100% comes under the "really expensive" side of things.

Personally, I don't know how they do it - it must be local connections to get everything on the cheap... basically...

- For example, I can't get Neoprene mats printed for less than $55 USD, before delivery... That'd be $80 flat out Canadian (pre delivery)... Which would mean, if I offered no other prizes , then I'd not make Hall-Hire Costs even if I had 100 players paying $100 a piece to play...

Later this year, I'm going to try to see how far I can take a Giveaway of a Commemorative 3rd Party Damage Deck and some other prizes I've collected in the Kitty - (Including some copies of the Corellian Conflict Alt-Art cards that are otherwise completely unavailable in Canada).

I'd be down for anything they could make but they could at least put out some sets of colored bases like they've already released for X-Wing. It could be a large, medium, and small base, plus like 4 squadron bases, and the pegs for each. I'd buy multiples in multiple different colors.

I just got 2 HH packs and a Quasar and had some difficulty getting the black shield cap thing on. I pushed really hard or swapped shield pegs.
