Raze a city

By jasonspace, in Runewars

This tactic card Raze A City, instructs a player to destroy a city he/she controls! Is this done as soon as that player gains a city if he/she does not have one?

You keep a hand of Tactics cards which you may use when it says to use the card (e.g. during your turn). You are not forced to use Tactics cards when you draw them, or at any other time.

Thanks for the reply. To me however i don't see the advantage of having a card like that. Another words if i have and don't need to use it why does it exist. I guess the only thing i might use it for is if someone is trying to capture my city.

That is exactly what you would use it for. Or if you capture an enemy's city and don't plan to stay there. It's definitely a very situational card, at best.

I've had it used against me a couple times; my opponent would push into my territory, take my city, and then destroy it, knowing he wouldn't be able to hold on to it.

Fortunately, in one of those games, there were only two seasons on the board, and the Season card came up where you had to do an influence bid and choose a city to destroy, so the other city (which was near him) got wiped out, too!

karma at its best

Another reason to play it: you can't build a Stronghold in areas which contain cities. If you have a city in a chokepoint... which do you want more?

That's a good point. A city won't protect you, but destroy it and build a stronghold there instead? Much better protection (and you can recruit there, too).

Also a point you re missing is that some cities are too far away from your strongholds to hold onto as your enemies will have stronger nearby forces to take it back with, but with this card you could get your forces to the city, burn it, then retreat and deny him the city for the rest of the game.

Just did this in a game. I penetrated fairly deep toward an enemy homeland, took control of a city I couldnt hold, used rally support once to get the 3 influence the city provided, then burned it down RIGHT before I knew my opponent wanted to take it over, using strategize to go before he could mobilize. Then I moved all but one weak unit out and burned it to the ground!

He didnt even bother taking the hex back, because it only had one resource (like all the city hexes) and it would have taken up one of his battles. Strangely it ended up getting a dragon rune at some point (due to a season bid) and when he thought he could take it with 2 strong units, he had to retreat at the end of the battle because he forgot that I had the title which gave me +2 strength in a territory with a rune token. The game ended that turn and I ended up having more runes than him.... so sweet!

In fact you can't use Tactics cards the turn you draw them.

Good point, I think that may be an oft-overlooked rule. (In fact, I had overlooked it, and had to look it up just now to confirm!

You can use Tactics cards the season immediately AFTER drawing them, just not the same season you draw them.
