Squall and Strategic: Absurd token grabbing shenanigans

By thecactusman17, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Saw something interesting and entertaining last night in a friendly game at another table. Not sure if the timing is correct, maybe someone can offer a suggestion.

Squall: When you activate, you may choose up to 3 unengaged friendly squadrons at close-medium range. Those squadrons may move up to distance 2. If they do, they cannot end their movement unengaged.

Strategic: When you end your movement at distance 1 of 1 or more objective tokens, you may move 1 of those tokens so that it is at distance 1 of you.

This brings up some really important questions, because of the following: all the objective token reward missions let you take tokens you tokens after you activate , usually when or after you reveal a command dial. And this means that you can activate and choose to activate Squall and its accompanying squadrons before those tokens are grabbed, bring them into range (or in the case of minefields, push them away) and get the points for them before taking any actions. Only 2 missions with objective tokens involve things happening before ships activate: hyperspace assault (start of the round) and Planetary Ion Cannons (end of command phase).

You're completely right. The order is:

  1. Before you activate
  2. When you activate <--- Squall goes here
  3. Before you reveal a command dial
  4. When you reveal a command dial <--- Salvage Run, Intel Sweep, etc go here
  5. After you reveal a command dial
  6. Before you perform an attack
  7. ...
  8. After you perform a maneuver
  9. After you activate (I think?)

EDIT: For completeness, an effect happening "during your activation" (see e.g. Ahsoka Tano) can be triggered anytime after point 1 but before point 9.

Its more than 2 that do not use the trigger: Reveals a command dial.

If you check all the missions that use objective tokens:

  • Targeting Beacon: While attacking
  • Fire Lanes: End of round
  • Hyperspace Assault: At the start of any round.
  • Jamming Barrier: While Attacking
  • Planetary Ion Cannon: At the end of the command phase
  • Capture the VIP: Reveals a command dial
  • Intel Sweep: Reveals a command dial
  • Minesfield: Ends its movement
  • Dangerous Territory: Overlap an obstacle
  • Salvage Run: Reveals a command dial
  • Sensor Net: Reveals a command dial

But yes. These that trigger when reveals a command dial can be abused with the Squall titel.

Minor typo, but that last word should be engaged. That's right isn't it?
