Is using no upgrade cards viable?

By drail14me, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm playing a 225 point league match.

My opponent will have 6-7 Rebel ships with upgrades including a decked out Poe, Shira Bey and Ten Numb with the rest being generic pilots

I can bring a 7 ship Rebel list including a decked out Dash, Garven Dreis and Nera Dantels, 3 TLT Gold Sqd and a Green Squad all decked out with upgrades or a bare 10 ship list including Dash, Garven, Nera, blue sqd B wing, 4 Rookie x-wings and 2 prototype A-wings.

Would the 3-4 ship advantage going with no upgrades be viable?

With that many points, I firmly believe ship count is huge!!! The reason: If you bring a swarm of PS 2-4, yes several may get popped before they fire, but none of them affect the overall power to a list. Where as, if you load up a Super Dash and he gets focused down early, that could be 50+points down the drain and only 2 HLC shots got fired. Even with 2 play mats, once the fleets get to shooting there is very little likely hood to get through without a bump or landing squarely with 5+ arcs on you, so the group of lower PS actually have an advantage by flooding the lanes first, blocking his action dependent ships and all yours got a focus for D. It sounds horrible to do to someone, but a huge list of TLT Y's and Generic T-65/T-70's flown straight at the enemy, maybe some plasma torps for alpha thrown in somewhere and you will carve through him. Set the x's in center and flank them with y's to form a kill line and keep a pocket ace or two hiding on the edges waiting to finish off whatever survives. Just my 2 cents. I will say that due to options like Inqy and OL and a flood of x7 defenders that I like Imperials for something like what I am talking about.

I think if you're going with named pilots, you should give them upgrades that compliment their pilot abilities, i.e. Poe, PTL, BB-8.

If you're going full-on swarm with generics, then you'd be good to not include any upgrades. Why would you take a blank Nera over a generic B-Wing? For an additional 3 PS? I don't think the points are worth it unless you give her EM and a Torp. That's just my take on it, though I don't have experience with epic, so maybe there's more to having good pilots that I give credit to.

Thanks for the encouragement to give this a try. I just finished my league match. I used my 10 un-upgraded ships vs his 6 fully upgraded ships. I came out with the overwhelming win only losing two of my ships. The sheer numbers worked well in this match!

I was playing in a progressive league. We started week one by drafting one named pilot and building a squad around them with 75 points. Each week, we gained an additional 25 points. At 150 points and 200 points, we drafted another named pilot. My drafts were Nera, Garven and Dash. Those pilots HAD to be in our squad but the rest of the squad was up to us.
