Carve a Path against Stealthy

By Alarin, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

Usually I like official answers, just that they are official and then there is this: https://boardgamegeek.com/article/14448826#14448826

1) Does this mean if you roll 2 range with Carve a Path all affected monsters are missed?

2) What about Blast?

considering this situation:

:D (HERO) performing a ranged attack with blast targeting  (KOBOLD)

 (DEEP ELF)

-_- (FREE SPACE)

so he needs to roll 4 range normally - then triggers blast and 'hits' the Deep Elf( )- but he rolls 5 range so the whole attack is now a miss?.. because he now needs a range of 4+3 = 7?

Thanks!

This is what we know on Carve a Path through uFAQs:

  • Carve A Path does not target any monster. It affects only monsters in spaces the Skirmisher moved through.
  • The attack occurs from the space the Skirmisher ends his movement.
  • If the Skirmisher is defeated before the attack is performed, Carve A Path immediately ends (with no attack roll being made).

In contrast to Whirlwind, Carve a Path does not have any target and all figures moved through are equally affected by the attack. I think that the attack does not have any inherent range requirement, as the choice of the space counted to would be arbitrary. Stealthy is irrelevant here as no figures are targeted.

Blast is different as it affects all figures adjacent to a targeted space. Thus, if the attack does not fulfill the range requirement to the targeted space (+3 for targets with Stealthy), the entire attack is a miss. Again, a Stealthy ability on figures merely affected (through Blast) but not targeted by the attack is irrelevant.

Thank you for the reply.

Ah... man.. this is weird. I mean If the situation was real in the narrative way.. why wouldn't the whirlwind hit the other targets? In the end, only she has the stealthy, so only she'd dodge right?

And then why couldn't she dodge the Skirmisher when he is carving the way through them when she is able to?

My little brain just can't process some of these rules.

I guess the answer to this is that there is only ONE attack(imbued with whatever) and can entirely hit(minus defense) or entirely miss. I think they thied to avoid the possibility of 'partial miss' which would mess other abilities or something.

That is exactly it. Attacks have a binary outcome: hit, miss. It can never be both.

does that mean the Deep Elf can make the Blast and Carve a Path a miss, even if he is 'only' affected?

Nope, as outlined above, Stealthy works only if figures are targeted .
