Buying core set + what else?

By Herr Style, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I'm thinking of getting into Armada, and have the possibility of also picking up an additional cheap ship per faction along with the Core set. What would make it more balanced in points and game play, getting a Raider or a Gladiator for Imperials, and for rebels a Nebulon B, CR90 (or at a push an Assault Frigate, but this is really pushing it)? Also, buying two core sets is just out of my price range at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

For Imperials, the second ship should probably be the Gladiator. Great ship and great titles. Raider is definitely useful, but a bit brittle so tough on the inexperienced.

For Rebels, I'd get the CR90 pack. Multiple CR90s are viable. The Nebulon pack is good for the titles, but it's sort of rare to see two on the table.

I probably wouldn't buy two core sets. You get the extra ships, but you don't get the upgrades that you'd get if you bought the separate expansions. Save your money, and if you enjoy the game, buy one new ship every so often.

I'd definitely go Gladiator and CR90. The Raider is delicate and having two CR90s is probably better than two Nebulon-Bs.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was considering a Gladiator for future expansion, so will include that in my plans, and now you've both confirmed it a CR90 over the Neb B. This will be my anniversary present from SWMBO. Chances of it happening are quite high as I'm getting her a new bike, and my Armada stuff will be less than a quarter of her bike.

So, I have gone and ordered it. Unfortunately, the Cr90 had increased in price overnight, so it had me looking at the Nebulon B at $19.99. But then I saw the MC30 at about the same price as the new CR90, so got that instead. So need to get my buddy weaned off of X Wing to try out Armada. So it will be the core set with a Gladiator and a MC30. Hopefully this is a good match for a decent game.
