Disk Wars L5R was about the 4th game in the L5R universe, and possibly the 3rd using the DiskWars rules.

CCG -> RPG -> Clan Wars (the miniatures wargme) -> Disk Wars

Disk Wars -> Doomtown -> L5R

Most of the art on the Disks comes from the CCG

I've never even heard of disk wars. Sounds to me like something you would do when you get too fckd up to play disk golf! ;)

There was an L5R miniatures game? That sounds way to niche to be financially viable--but ****, I want to play that so bad!

Clan WarS was nice but man were there to many mechanics in it. The RPg's d10 system with the CCG's action cards.

I'm pretty confident FFG will make a L5R miniature game.

I'm here because I couldn't resist the temptation that is this thread's mysterious title.

If they presumably own the mechanics for the disk wars warhammer game they put out, we may even see the return of l5r disk wars. Is be surprised tho; despite being fun, I'm pretty sure disk wars bombed.

Didn't they try remaking it not too long ago? Or did that crash and burn also.

That's the one I'm referring to. I actually bought the core set and had a ton of fun with it, but my LGS didn't auto-restock the core or expansion, and by the time I realized they made 2 boxes beyond the core it was already clearanced out.

My biggest regret from the GW split is not picking up another core and 2 copies of each xpack on heavy clearance, I think it only would have cost me maybe $40-50 for 5 items.

It's a wargame that uses disks of varying size in place of miniatures. You move them across the battlefield by flipping them over on themselves.

I was contemplating getting the FFG Warhammer Diskwars set when they had that clearance sale just before the license expired. I chose to pick up Fury of Dracula and Forbidden Stars instead. I wish I had more disposal income at the time because everything was selling for a steal. I'm too scared to look up the selling price for the discontinued products now.

Depends on the product. Conquest is cheap, if l5r wasn't coming out I'd probably pick that up.

If you want the expansion chars to warhammer fantasy adventure card game, that's a little tougher.

How did the license breakup come about?

They'll never say but it seems like both FFG wanted to break into mini war gaming and GW wanted to redo their specialty games line. Both areas previously left unexplored due to their partnership. The split may have just been a mutual thing where both sides decided not to bother negotiating hard to re-up their contract.

That said it was clearly a surprise to the employees since Brad (the then designer of Conquest) seemed legitimately upset about it right around when the public announcement went out and lots of design space for that game was left on the floor with it being abruptly cancelled at the end of the third cycle. Forbidden Stars never got an expansion even though it was a widely popular board game. The Warhammer Quest card game got a couple print on demand packs that felt like parts of an aborted proper expansion for that game. Fury of Dracula just got a new edition before the announcement. It definitely feels like the decision to break with GW was a sudden thing on FFG's side regardless of whether it was their desire to initiate the split.

I never played any of the Warhammer FFG games (or any Warhammer games period, besides the Total War game for PC), but I feel really bad for the fans that got screwed over by this. It sucks when the realities of the business world play havoc with a fandom's favorite games. Kinda reminds me of when Disney bought Lucasarts, and decided to randomly axe the awesome-looking Star Wars 1313 game. It was a huge blow to the fans--but, ya know, what can you do?

This thread has brought back unpleasant memories of trying procure a copy of First Founding.

Thats a game that could seriously do with major simplification, and possibly a rescaling to more like Warmahordes model count.

What surprise you're talking about? Playtest stopped receiving new cards more than year before official announcment. Conquest was doomed in late 2015. They had last cycle in production pipeline and tried to sell it, so even at Gencon 2016, a 2-3 month before announcment they lied by puting such stuff in their presentation:

He had a couple messages he posted to social media a significant time after the leak from the play testers that their latest play test packages were late. Those posts suggested to us at the time that he was only just told about the cancellation. Being an outsider one can gleam that this meant they knew it was possible that the license agreement was in question, but work was still being done and he at least had some hope that Conquest would continue. That I assume was the actual point where the employees were told, which of course was a significant time before we the consumers were told. I don't begrudge FFG for controlling the flow of information to curve the sales dip that the announcement was likely to cause. I really don't feel like digging all those posts back up because why bother reliving that drama. If anyone is interesting in digging up all that history it's pretty well documented in the CGDB forums which were the most active archived online outlet for Conquest at the time.

As far as the lies go I wish the play testers never leaked that information because it cast a shadow over the last cycle, which was a fun cycle. I would have rather the Conquest conversation be about the game that last tournament season and not be dominated by talks about it's possible end or then later it's certain end.

I'd rather see it rescaled to runewars size, but it wasn't an overly complex game. I think it's big failing is that it tried too hard to be like the card game and not its own thing

You had initiatives with a dice component for every unit on the field. It might not have been an overly complex game for the time period with games like Confrontation running around, but by the standards of any minis game that has displayed longevity...way too complex.
