Whoopdiflippingdo. So we got to the moon. And..... played golf.

Good job guys.

Interesting. What did the space race accomplish? I mean, private companies weren't exactly clamoring to take the risk of putting things in space.

How about weather satellites and communication satellites?

GPS? Beats the heck out of a sextant and a chronometer.

How about space-based observing devices? X-ray observatories? Hubble?

These are all possible because people figured out how to reliably put things in orbit. That's a big, expensive, and risky project. It isn't something private companies would ever do. It isn't something you do on a whim.

I'm not drumbeating for "'murica". I don't care who did what, as long as SOMEbody did it. But I think dismissing the effects of the space race is pretty short-sighted.

Cheers!

Hey now, it achieved one thing...

It is one of the few events most Americans won't complain about taxes in regards to, that's a big deal.

Considering people dont even want their taxes going to things like health care or education, its a mighty big deal.

you know after living in the states a 11 years and recently becoming a citizen I still do not understand why the plural of Math is not maths.

The big question I have is why @Ginkapo decided he needed to correct my English. That's not usually a friendly targeted remark to start a conversation with.

And yet here we are having a pleasant discussion about the benefits of blue sky thinking and government research!

Instead of being on topic as it relates to Armada. You're off topic then?

Blail.

How does posting a closed group of stats without any prompt questions act as a discussion starter? All very well objecting to my existance, however, one should really consider their own position before flinging mud.

You will notice I also added an open question in the first few posts which acted as a prompt to start the conversation you wanted but failed to spark yourself.
