The Fall of Cloud City

By lupex, in Game Masters

So, anyone know what happens to cloud city immediately after the Empire take charge? Lando makes his announcement and then what?

Does a star destroyer stay in system? Do stormtroopers replace wing guard? Do the Imperials stop all ships from leaving? What about gambling?

Any help or sources would be appreciated.

In the old Marvel comics there was a storyline about this, but obviously this is now deep, deep non-canon territory. I have no idea whether it's possible to find it - there might be online copies somewhere, but it came out in the mid- to late 80s, so it's hard to say. In that comic the Empire took over Cloud City, Lando came back and with the help of Lobot and the Ugnaughts (completely aside, that sounds like an awesome band name) sabotaged it and made the Imperials think the whole city had been destroyed. After that I seem to recall it kept operating in secret.

Lacking other sources I think that the logical thing to do for the Empire would be to put some Imperial administrator in charge and keep the facility running; after all, Tibanna gas is a valuable commodity and highly useful to the war effort. Whether or not it would keep being a haven for gamblers and the like would probably depend on the administrator's personal policies; a hefty tax on winnings could provide some extra money for the Empire (or the administrator's own pockets, if they're so inclined). The Rebellion could also conceivably make an effort to capture Cloud City, again for the valuable Tibanna gas. I imagine that after RotJ Lando might use his standing in the Alliance to convince them to help him recapture the city. Possibly using, for example, a small group of Rebel operatives...

That's a two-parter in issues 56 ("Coffin in the Clouds") and 57 ("Hello, Bespin, Good-bye!"). A fun story that included some odd details, such as a solid, habitable surface to Bespin that was identified as the homeworld of the Ugnaughts (WEG later retconned this surface into floating land masses near the bottom of the habitable "Life Zone" that the sky cities are in.) and Lobot's implant allowing him to telikinetically manipulate electronics, like a series of bomb triggers.

They're included in several different collections of the original Marvel series.

Thanks, I do remember that story but I think it happened after the Empire was defeated at Endor, or am I mistaken?

I can't seem to find anything about the inbetween period. I am thinking of setting a session at the point Lando makes a run for it, and want to include some interesting problems for the PCs to deal with.

It's in between ESB and RotJ (one of my favorite runs of the book, thanks to art by the legendary Walt Simonson, who perfectly captured enough of the detail from screen while blending it with traditional comics art in his own distinct style). How soon are you needing info? I'm currently away from my books for a few days, but can get some info your way when I get back home to them.

I have a few weeks before we get to that bit, so no rush mate.

I would assume that the Empire would do with it what they do with most worlds: install a governor along with a small contingent of troops to help maintain order and then move on. So long as that governor continued to send profits to the Empire, they go on paying little attention to it. I'm sure the ISB would still stick around to root out any disloyalty among the Wing Guard and other citizens, but overall, it's low on the Empire's list (excepting the value of the Tibanna gas).

From Wookieepedia:

After the escape of the Millennium Falcon, the Rebel Alliance and the Bespin security forces, including Lando's Commandos , attempted to defend the city against the Imperial strike force sent to take control of it. The strike force landed on the city and established a beachhead. The Rebels attempted to disable the Gravity Control Generators to disable the city and prevent its takeover, but the Imperial strike force captured the generators, saving the city. The Imperials also destroyed the Bespin Government Center and built an Imperial Palace in its place, cementing their occupation. [10] During the occupation the Imperial forces present on Bespin were attacked by a Rebel force. [18] The Rebel's Rogue Squadron also led a raid in order to secure tibanna gas for the Alliance Fleet . The Rogues destroyed three main power generators in the city to disable the Imperial defenses. [23] Cloud City was liberated following the Battle of Endor thanks to the intel provided by Tian Chyler, a defector from the Imperial Security Bureau . [24] [25]

The Rebels try to disable the gravity control generator? That would plunge the entire city and its inhabitants--including civilians--to their deaths. This was obviously written before the "terrorist acts are absolutely unacceptable" stance of the modern take on the Rebels was solidified.

Sounds like an oversimplification of that Marvel story. As I recall, they did sabotage the gravity system...making it appear that the city was plunging to its doom, then reactivated the system when the Imperials fled.

Spoilering this in case of accidental player eyes tipping to my plans . . . .

I was thinking of doing something like this next weekend. I was going to take the old WEG game Crisis on Cloud City, have the players get half way into the game and then suddenly Vader shows up on his completely unrelated task. They still have to complete the mission and stop X0's takeover of the city, but the job now gets super tough as they have to now fly under the radar. And they're all Jedi - so if they start waving sabers around and throwing boxes with the power of their mind, Bad Things Will Happen.

So the climax of the game will run parallel to the end of Empire, but the two stories wont overlap at all - beyond maybe perhaps "As you climb the central air shaft to the computer core, you see flashes of red and blue waaaay in the distance."

The canonical explanation is thus:

Quote

After the capture of the rebels, the Empire took over Cloud City, establishing a skeleton garrison to ensure that the citizens would pay proper taxes and fines to the regime. After the Empire suffered a major defeat at Endor , the Cloud City garrison was pulled to support more strategic targets, and there were celebrations in the streets. [10] In the absence of a baron administrator, a council of business representatives came to run the city. [4]

Age of the New Republic

Before word of the Emperor's death could reach the city, Imperial Governor Adelhard established the Iron Blockade over the entirety of the Anoat sector , shutting down travel and communications in and out of Cloud City. The city would also serve as the location of Governor Adelhard's personal chamber located within the prime tower. Ultimately, a militia led by Lobot would succeed in relaying messages to the New Republic , and with the aid of the Uprising , would successfully liberate the city from Imperial control. [4]

Around the time of the Battle of Jakku , Lando Calrissian and Lobot led a joint New Republic and Bespin Wing Guard mopping-up operating against Imperial troops who had taken up position in the Casino level's Bolo Tanga room. Calrissian managed to convince a dozen of the Imperials to surrender. However, an Imperial sergeant refused to surrender. The Baron Administrator was forced to shoot him dead with his Vitiator .

I was sure I looked on wookieepedia, but it was late and I clearly wasn't paying attention.

Now I need to look up Landos Commandos as they sound interesting.

This is what I find unstastifying in large chunks of the EU, the tendency to try and give every little thing ryme and reason to every location ever. "Apprently there were HUGE REBEL BATTLES BETWEEN THE ALLIANCE AND THE EMPIRE TO DENY THEM CLOUD CITY!" Wut, this place is meant to be an illegal mining station, if a rebel army was stationed there we would have seen it. Lol.
