The most fun in X-Wing?

By doobleg, in X-Wing

Hi guys! We had our first store champs yesterday, and I swear I had the funnest/funniest X-Wing match-up possible.

I was flying VI Chiraneau and Major Stridon, with Kylo Ren in the Decimator.

My opponent was flying VI Chiraneau and Marek Steel... with Kylo Ren in the Decimator.

"I'll show you the Dark Side!"

"No, I'LL show YOU the Dark Side!!!"

By the end of the fourth round of combat, Striden had the highest PS (4), and every ship had hull damage while still maintaining shields. Freakin' hilarious.

Anyone else got similar stories? What's the funnest/funniest match-up you've ever had??? :D

One of the funniest reactions was when I ran standard Whisper alongside Chiraneu with Engine Upgrade, Gunner and Darth Vader crew, my opponent ran Rey and Norra, and I raced Chiraneu and Whisper forward, got whisper into Range 1 really fast and lit Norra up while Chiraneu missed with the first shot to crit with Vader, and then fired again and vadered after that.

Norra never got to shoot.

Every time I put down 4 lambdas on the "table" on Vassal, I get a good reception. It's a good list, to boot.

Other than that, playing Chiraneau+Kylo with Lt. COlzet escort - I blinded Dengar for an entire game...

Watching my friend consistently screw up his Decimator dial and hitting a rock 7 rounds in a row, then landing on one of his own mines, hitting another rock, getting a console fire...

It was without a doubt the funniest **** thing I've seen in the game.

We dubbed it the Drunken Party Bus... which I destroyed by just ramming it with my CR-90.

How do you fly it these days? FCS and Tactician? Engines? I have to get back to Lambda-ing some time, too

Flying the nonsense that is 2 Scyks & 2 HWKs, and then having Sunny Bounder (With only Light Scyk) at range 1 of a RAC, that is dropped to PS 0 via Mux, roll 3 hits into 4 with her ability to finish him off.

Edit: Actually had a game the other night where Sunny at range 2 rolled 2 crits into a 3rd on a range 2, PS 0 Miranda to finish her off.... Sunny is nasty.

What's your loadout as I'm on RAC/Stridan and enjoying it but tinkering with specifics...

I'll second this. I don't remember the exact order of events, but my friend lost *BOTH* Fel and Inquisitor from only running into obstacles. I never did any damage to either ship. Best part was his 3rd ship was Palpmobile. I do remember Fel died from actual obstacle damage, but Inquisitor flew off the board after getting a crit card

The most fun I've had has been flying HotAC or mutually agreed upon flying non-meta lists. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with flying the peak efficiency lists, but sometimes the unpredictability of what jank we can come up with really makes the game.

One game I flew all the new Scyk pilots at once (except Inaldra) plus a Protectorate. The game before I had flown a generic kirahxz, generic Protectorate, quad jumper and Manaroo (I know, Jumpmaster, but she wasn't nearly as effective with this group).

I'm really looking forward to playing the CROC campaign through.

One time my friend @Withaaron , was flying a stryker. He had a major hull breach on it, adaptive aileroned into a debris cloud, took a direct hit, maneuvered into an asteroid, took a major explosion and that triggered into another direct hit for a total of 5 damage for just moving. I laughed and laughed and laughed.

Yorr with double inspiring recruit, then three OGPs - one with vader, another with tactician and all with FCS. It sucks against ordinance lists but works very well against jousters. As soon as a single ship - even an academy TIE - gets past the herd, it's all over.

Oicunn Deathrain is still my most favouritest list. RAMMING SPEED!

This is why you don't let Ewoks fly anything

The most fun I've had has been in the 40th Anniversary tournaments. Some stores have deliberately restricted ship lists, to reflect the original film, or trilogy, but most have been entirely unrestricted.

However, many players have chosen to bring fairly unusual lists. I've posted already about enjoying flying Porkins, Dutch & Garven (swapped out for Hobbie) before, but so many others have done something similar recently.

Yesterday, I flew my Death Star Death Squadron against: Han & Poe; Lando & Wedge (Death Star II Buddies, so had to have Nien Numb on board while R2D2 and C3PO couldn't be there due to being on Endor at the time); Capt Yorr with the Emperor on board escorted by two Royal Guard Interceptors; and Dengar with 2 Y-Wings (ok, not a particularly thematic list!).

Other players brought: 4 Y-Wings, all with Ion Cannon Turrets and the BTL-A4 title (What?!); B-Wings & Dash or Leebo; two players had Black Squadron led by Vader (Mithel, Backstabber, Dark Curse, one with Wampa, one with Chaser); Luke, Wedge & Biggs; 3 scyks plus Palob; and several others I've forgotten.

I've never seen even a casual evening have so much laughter from the players as we found out which version of our D-list ships could win, along with a lot of exclaiming over how fragile X-Wings are as they got destroyed in one shot by various ships.

Flying Imperial Boba with Vader as his Crew vs Emperor Palpatine of all people.

Then pretending Boba/Vader were both drinking PBR and fighting over which direction to choose for the bank maneuvers.

And subsequently blowing them up using Vader's ability with 2 hp remaining.

Chiraneau has VI, Engine, Gunner, Kylo Ren, Rebel Captive, and Engine Upgrade. Stridon has FCS, Pattern Analyser, and Systems Officer.

Green moves on Striden allow him to throw Chirpy a target lock up to range 3. Combine that with Co-Ordinate and Chirpy doing all the things! :)

Every time I put a crazy and yet dangerous list on the board that catches somebody by who has spent time practicing for victory by surprise. That look, the occasional verbal release, the looks from all takers next to me... Victory is secondary to that panic inducing moment.

I'm now preparing for GenCon. Operation 'No Joy' is looking for takers to help me strategize my chosen insanity list.

The moment when you don't know who wins or loses.

Last tournament I had an Expertise QD down to 1 HP against a VI'd Backdraft. We were jousting, in a way, and it was down to dials: do I do a soft 1 turn in case he turns and tries to get me in his rear guns, or go straight and BR in case he thought I'D turn and so he decided to go straight instead?

I decided to straight and BR. He decided to turn. Perfectly out of my arcs, perfectly in his rear arcs. GG.

New one as of today:

Went to my local game store to play a guy I helped introduce the game to about 2 months ago. I'm told he hasn't played a game since, so I figure "okay, he's still green, I'll go easy on him. He'll have a few basic ships and maybe a few favorites..."

I decide to take in my Phoenix Squadron build (Tycho, Farrel, Ghost and Phantom) since, well, it's not great but looks impressive. I show up early, set up the mat and my ships and then he shows up...

Two B-wings with ion cannons, an ARC-170, a Y-Wing and K-Wing both with TLTs. My Ghost didn't stand a friggin chance, dodged behind a rock, pooped out the Phantom, back track with Ezra so Sabine could drop a Cluster Mine and managed to cripple his Y-Wing which Jake finished off. Phantom gets popped pretty quick followed by Tycho getting ionized onto a rock by a B-Wing and wiped clean by his K-Wing. Spent the next 30 minutes taking pot shots at his B-Wings and K-Wing (which KEPT REGENERATING SHIELDS!!! Imperials, I feel your pain and I've sworn off the K-Wing from ever gracing my fleets... TLTs will though... hey, they're coming with the TIE Aggressors I'm getting... fight me!) until my dice and autothrusters failed me.

Great game all around and taught me to NEVER. GO. EASY. AGAIN.

How could he bring 2 B-wings with ion cannons (cheapest 25 each), an ARC-170 (cheapest 25), a Y-wing with TLT (cheapest 24), and the regenerating K-wing with TLT (Miranda for 35 points)? That adds together 134 points.

Virtually identical - I have Kallus not Systems Officer. :-) Coordinate is massive value!

Do you get value from FCS? I think in all the games I've played I used a TL from it like twice. The only other thing to spend those points on is the title, though, and I think that's not ideal with Rebcap already in the list.

FCS is super-handy, especially if you're foregoing a focus action to coordinate (guessing you'd see the benefit more without Kallus to change results). ;)

There are so many...

In Heroes if the Aturi Cluster when I shot down 2 of 3 Tie Phantoms. That was one if the best moments.

I played a list that had a generic Kihraxz fighter that wouldn't die. He survived so much punishment before finally going down.

In X-wing Mario Kart, there was the game where one guy was in the lead most of the game, but I caught up in time to just barely beat him across the finish line!

Realizing that my Kihraxz didn't have a 3 hard turn that would let me get off deployment zone and win the mission! I totally lost instead.

Well, it's more that you never get chance to shoot at the same guy twice! I want 'hands free' attack dice but FCS just isn't working out.

Yesterday at my local 20 person Store Championship, I flew Dash Miranda to a 1-3 finish. In my last game, I was paired up with a guy running Dash and Nien Nunb. I had light Dash (LW, Rey, HLC, Title) and he had a modified heavy Dash (PTL, Cassian, HLC, EU, Title). We both obliterated each other's support ship with HLC and then the Dashes started trading blows.

I had the upper hand for dice mods with Rey's focus and the ability to reroll with LW on offense and defense, yet he had the superior mobility with PTL, Cassian crew (guessing my maneuver and able to change his), EU and native barrel roll. And since I had initiative, he moved after me.

With thirty minutes left, he had two hull and I had 3. All I had to do was stay at range 2 and HLC him and weather the return shot with Rey's focus and LW reroll.

Me: So yeah I guess you could try to stay in range 1 for 30 minutes and not get shot?

Him: ...Oh yeah true. But I'm ahead on points so I'll win!

Me: Craaap.

Cue 30 minutes of me desperately flying left and right, backwards and forwards, trying to shake him. But between his Cassian guess safety net, boost and BR, he could either guarantee R1 or be able to PTL both boost/BR and disengage. And of course all debris made no difference. We made complete circles around the board about 3 times.

To add to this madness, there was a set of cluster mines about R1 from the board edge that Miranda had placed before going to her grave. The only chance I had of possibly giving myself some room to shoot was maneuvering behind them so Dash 2 couldn't follow. But I was never able to get the correct approach vector, and I would have risked being in a position where I would either eat cluster mines or have a corner go off the board edge.

Finally after one long disengagement, I came in with a 2 bank away and focused, and he miscalculated his maneuver and reposition actions and he was 1/4 inch inside R3. That left him without focus and ripe for killin'. I got my additional Rey focus and killed him with 4 hits. And he proceeded to spend his target lock and roll for 3 hits. Well, I rolled two blanks and my LW reroll also rolled a blank. So we both died.

And of course he won in Final Salvo by 1 hit. I wouldn't say it was fun but it sure was funny!
