Not Pokemon -but certainly a select few .
The Core Game is 180 points (barely), and it is a fraction of the taste of what 400 would give you - including missing some of the most Iconic ships...

What would you suggest to bring the point cost up to 400?
There are just too many things. I eould suggest the fighter packs and either an ISD+MC80 or a Gladiator+MC30/AFMK2 combo. If you don't want to invest too heavily at first I would suggest the big guns because you can build 400 points fleets with them. A VSD+Gladiator fleet with no additional ships will never reach 400.
Pick a faction and go from there, best answer.

is a good place to start.
I'd recommend the following purchases for a decent game at around $160 (retail):
1) Rogues & Villains ($20). Has good stuff in it for both Imps and Rebels so it's an ideal place to start for a play setup that needs to be about both players.
2) Second Corellian Corvette ($20). Better titles, a great Commander, and CR90s work great in swarms.
3) Arquitens Light Cruiser ($20). The Arkitten has a core Imperial commander in Moff Jerrjerrod who actually makes Victories usable, and is a good ship in and of itself that plays very differently from the Victory: as a flanker rather than a dive in and kill stuff ship.
You should be able to play 300 point games with those, but you might want to proxy a few cards like Turbolaser Reroute Circuits and some of the squadron cards such as Black Squadron or Wedge. Another dice set would be preferable, because there are lots of situations where you're rolling 4 or 5 dice even with the core set, but it isn't strictly NECESSARY.

What you want is going to depend heavily on your preferred faction. I'd suggest one large ship, one small ship, and one flotilla for both factions, as well as the squadron 1 pack of your preferred faction.
If you go Imperial, try playing in a local Q3 tournament kit as the current door prize is an excellent upgrade card for black die ships (Assault Proton Torpedoes which you can use with Gladiators or Raiders) but its normally only available in the MC30 Rebel ship pack. If you have a smaller local tournament you might even get 2-3 cards that you can use for future expansions.
My first Imperial expansions would be a Gladiator, Imperial Star Destroyer, and Imperial Squadrons 1.
My first Rebel expansions would be an MC80 Home One, an MC30, and Rebel Squadrons 1.
In both cases, I'd follow up with a flotilla and a small ship from wave 1-2, particularly the Raider for Imperials and the Nebulon or CR90 for Rebels (both Rebel core expansions have some excellent upgrades and the CR90 in particular is a good ship to run 2 of).
Thanks for all the advice .
I have ordered the base game and will probably get
rouges and villains (none of the first squads available at the moment ).
Isd as its cheap and why not?
Mc30 frigate
These i have found all pretty cheap at the moment and avalible
Any ideas on next purchase?
I would say an MC80 Home One and maybe a Gladiator or Arquiten.
Imo Armada is currently in the "one of Everything" phase as there are no ships that do not see table time. I'd skip a second vsd though, that would be redundant after the core set, and would practically only net yoh upgrade cards.

I mostly agree with this with one addition. Get one of every expansion. Figure out how and what you like to play. Then add what fits that frame work. Unless you get addicted and buy two to three of everything regardless..... That's always my plan. 2 or everything. Sometimes three.

But the Upgrade Cards it Nets you.......
Primarily
- Motti
- Flight Controllers
Motti is kind of the Imperial Dodonna; relatively cheap, and is useful in every list. Others like Screed, Vader, Tarkin etc are all good, but are generally either expensive or specialised. Moff Jerry is a close second to Motti in this regard.
When I started out, I was somewhat confused as to what to pick up, but soon realised the real question was actually what order to pick it up in. Personally, I went straight for an ISD, Glad, MC80, and MC30. Thereafter I picked up an extra Neb, Corvette, Squadron packs, and a couple of Raiders, over the course of several weeks. Sprinkle flotillas to taste (they were forever sold out here, so I left them off for quite a while).
Now, there's two more waves to consider after that, but that was the order of events for me in the first six months or so, and I found it evolved quite nicely with me. The first purchases meant I got straight into 400pt games, and I got to learn more of the variety in options with later purchases.
Bottom line is, nothing is compulsory, but everything is both fun and useful, so there's no really bad choices here.
Edited by NakedDexI was going to recommend going imperial since ISDs take up so many points. But both MC80s also cost a lot of points (so they fill up your 400pts pretty fast). Also the rebels have the advantage of having ships in the starter set that you will use in a starter fleet. Don't get me wrong I am not saying that the VSD is worthless, but if you are just starting out and only want to spend the $$$ to fly a single list you probably don't want the VSD in it.
There are a few things that you are really going to want after you pick you big ships: Some flotillas. One flotilla might be enough to start with. But they are just so good right now you don't want to neglect them. You probably want the fighter squadron pack for the faction you plan on flying. Squadron aces are usually really good and they can also use up your points pretty fast too.

So you can only field one vsd ?

Yoou can field I believe as many as 4 with upgrades if you want. VSDs are slow and don't turn well. I own 2 and sometimes field both. Deployment is the key when using them. You don't want to spend 75+ points only for it to be out of play(out of combat) for several rounds
The core is barely a taste, and has next to no replayability imo. It is a rather simple exercise involving flying around a victory star destroyers front arc.
Edited by DarthainThe Vic does have some good upgrade cards in it that you won't get if you just buy the starter set. I want to buy another Vic just for the cards, but I bought two starter set way back in the day and I just can't justify 4 Vics. (Oh wait with Jerjerod and disposable capacitors maybe I can).
Update .
I have ordered base set, isd, imperial light cruiser, home one, assault figate and rouges and villains.
Hopefully that should give me a few options
Sounds like a great start. I might suggest having a look at the Corellian Conflict campaign box at some stage, too. Apart from giving you an interesting way to play the game with a friend who may not be into the tournament style play (or, indeed, just another way to play for the sake of variety), the included squadron cards give a great boost to your potential squadrons (Biggs and Valen alone are pretty ubiquitous at this stage). It also expands the number of objectives you have to choose from, which can make for more varied games in itself.
