Need advice

By Morbid666, in Imperial Assault Campaign

I have the core set. What are the 4 best heroes out of the 6 to play the core campaign? Thx in advance.

The absolute best are Gideon, Fenn, and Diala. You can add Mak, Jyn, or Garkhaan to that to suit your preference (Mak is probably slightly better than the other two, in my opinion. But that could be wrong).

If it's your first time playing then those will serve you well; more experienced players tend to avoid combining them because they can be oppressively strong. So if your Rebel players are more experienced than your Imperial player, maybe pick only 2 of the 3 (Gideon, Fenn, and Diala) to make things less likely to swing heavily to the Rebel's side.

I would say Gaarkhan Mak Gideon Fenn is the best team in the core pack.

Don't underestimate the power of rerolls from Diala's Force Adept. It is the best value for 1 XP in the game, closely followed by Fenn's Tactical Movement and Diala's Force Throw.

Diala is S-tier. She has utility, defense, movement, focus, even range when she gets dancing weapon. My wife did a focused dancing weapon with a Force Pike for 5 die (B, G, G, Y, R). Did 12 damange in 1 shot.

Gideon was terrible for 2/4 the game, then decent for the 1/4, and amazing for the last 1/4. But mostly, he's just boring as crap. I was him and he was so boring. Every turn was the same, didn't buy any items, blah blah.

I'm doing my first campaign and play as the Empire. My friends got to pick who they wanted although I read about the combos here for which synergies well. I presented them causally so they had an idea what the heroes does.

Gaarkhan, hard hitting melee that can tank.

Gideon, support hero that doesn't need much equipment and gives away his activations.

Something like that. Mind you I only play against two friends so they control two each which would make having Gideon a bit less boring as mentioned by ... the cheesecake ?

In the end they chose the heroes they thought were cool. Diala and Mak by one and Fen and Gaarkhan by the other.

The conventional wisdom on the forums is that Gideon, Fenn, and Diala are the best Core box heroes, to the point that playing a campaign with all three of them is potentially game-breaking, and could require altering of missions rewards, or allowing the Imperial Player to use methods that would otherwise be considered unsporting. In my opinion, a seriously underestimated value of Gideon is that his Command ability means you don't need to spend credits on equipment for him, because he just has other people attack for him, which means the other heroes can buy the really sweet stuff.

I can tell you that in my first (and only) Core Box campaign, with the heroes as Gaarkhan, Diala, Gideon, and Jyn, Gaarkhan was considered the table's MVP in several games, but as the IP, I think this was due to Gideon's abilities.

If Gaarkhan gets Unstoppable, and pairs it with any of his other 3 or 4 XP abilities, and then Gideon gets Masterstroke, Air of Command, and Fearless Leader, together they are pretty terrifying for the IP. Gideon just orders Gaarkhan to attack high HP figures, and in doing so could remove as much as four strain per round. This allows Gaarkhan to wail on high HP figures before they can really hurt Gideon or the other Rebels, it means failing to take down Gaarkhan in one round just makes him angrier, and taking him down in one round is pretty much impossible. Plus you've still got two other heroes to keep lower HP figures from swarming all over Gideon, who can now rest to replenish his strain and still Command a figure to get in two attacks in one round. Fenn can use Blast to take down mass numbers of troops, Jyn can use Quick Draw to pick off troops after they activate, but before they attack, and Diala can use Force Adept to give rerolls to attacks. Pick any two of those and the Rebels have a real wrecking ball on their hands. That could be boring for some players who want variety in their play experience, but for those who enjoy synergy with the team and beating the Imperial player, it can be a hoot.

In our last game Gideon shot maybe twice the entire campaign, and only because he didn't have anything else left to do. He had masterstroke to command twice, and mobile tactician to score 4mp, all for one action. The only item he purchased was the cybernetic arm to increase his endurance allowing him to go longer without resting, he was clearly the best character in the group. We only lost the last mission because it was late and we rushed it when we should have taken our time.
