Well i tried it but it would have killed the Assault Frigate from the ram either way. Flipping up two with the boarding troopers DID make it so he couldnt use his exhausted defense tokens, but i'm not sure how great it is. Some of that may have been timing issues on my part though. Let me play a few more games with it and see if i can figure out how to get it to do what i want (side note: ive gotta stop taking Fleet Ambush, it screws with my understanding of when attacks happen and alla that.)

I have found the opposite. They pop really easily

I got two games in with it tonight.
Game 1: I got boarding troopers to work as intended. Even better. I managed to drop the shields and land a crit on a VSD with my other ships before Garel's Honor activated. Managed to get a Structural damage out of it. Rammed, pulled another structural damage. This meant that by the time boarding troopers triggered, I flipped up two structural damages. On the other hand, board position meant that I was going to kill that VSD from about 4 different arcs, so maybe it was cuter. The other thing I noted is that in contrast to an MC30, Garel's Honor just didn't have the speed or positioning to really make an escape. Perhaps some of this could be mitigated by deploying a bit differently and taking a different angle of approach (maybe more to the side?), but it does seem like the rammers want to lock in an approach right at the enemy and not deviate, which means they are very vulnerable while incoming and after their activation. When all was said and done, I was only 30 points up on the trade, which makes me lean away from it.
Game 2: Not a very skilled opponent. Consequenly, Garel's Honor managed to kill his target before getting to ram and activated boarding troopers. So I learned almost nothing from the contest.
I haven't decided yet if I really want to try it in a game tomorrow or play one of my other lists. I've enjoyed experimenting with a variant of my old Rieekan list and I really want to play that once. I'd also like to look at updating my Madine list and play a game or two with it in the new meta.
This game is so good that I always find myself with too much I want to do.
