Upgrade card bloat.

By TylerTT, in X-Wing

This game has a crazy number of upgrade cards required to be at the table for some lists.

each of my 3 a-wings needs five upgrade cards. That's 15 cards. That's only 60 of my 100 points.

for now I just stack all my non play relevant cards to the side but it's very annoying to carry all these cards around.

Sounds like somebody needs a hug. And maybe a Plano case.

I hear you, I fly A-Wings all the time and I'm constantly running out of room at tournaments to lay them all out.

Some people use full-size card sleeves or binder pages to keep their upgrade cards together. You can fit two upgrade cards sideways in the same space that a pilot card would take up.

Can't wait to see Vaksai lists after the title drops. Khiraxz running around with 7 and 8 cards attached to them

Then dont carry the cards

Go to yet another xwing squadron builder or whichever. Print in the "detailed" form and off you go

Nothat i feel the ffg method of fixing ships is at all efficient, but theres no reason to torture yourself unless youre going to regionals

I really like having all the info on the table. Also bombs and limited use upgrades like crack shot. List building cards like refit and prototype can be ignored during play but I think they are important to have as static reference.

I want to see cards that you only need a single copy of to cover any matching ships In Your list.

Like all b-wings over pilot skill * gain something!

From my experience, if both contestants/ players agree on this, it is a very convenient way to get around filling a second table's worth with cards.

However, I do not necessarily think there is too much Upgrade "bloat" in the game yet, mechanically speaking. Most cards carve out their own niches to fill quite nicely. To stretch the comparison a bit, we're far from something like a Battlefield 4 with its myriad of mid-range assault rifles.

As long as it stays that way, I'm golden. Customization is, after all, a good thing.

Lugging around too many upgrade cards?

Solution: Find and play a squadron that doesn't require (m)any upgrades to work. It's up to you to discover what that squadron may be.

I understand the feeling. A TIE striker swarm of 'basic generics' still has two upgrades attached each; "doing it properly" means laying out 15 cards.

And yes, Vaksai will be faintly ridiculous. 5 Cartel Marauders with Guidance Chips, Munitions Failsafe, XX-23 S-Thread Tracers, Inertial Dampeners each?

(Tempest Squadron TIE advanced are already that bad but admittedly only turn up in 4s)

My beloved FIVE. CARTEL. MARAUDERS. used to have 5 pilot cards and 5 shield tokens.

Now they'll have Vaksai, XX-23, BMST, GC, MF...

It's a brave new world.

edit: dammit @Magnus Grendel .

Because as we all know; Fantasy Flight Hates Trees .

Run 2 Patrol Leaders and Countdown. 1 upgrade card in the entire list yeah.

When playing i have a printed list anyways but still drag out all the cards.

Ordinance heavy K wings say HI!

Plus my tie with at least 4 upgrade cards on it!

i slide all the normal ones (like extra munitions/a wing test pilot) behind another card that needs it (so test pilot behind the EPT, munitions behind munitions) if i'm low on space.

What I did for a little while, to simplify things at home, was to lay out all the cards for a ship/squad on the scanner at home and just print off the whole thing as one sheet.

Cram as many as you can onto one sheet and cut them out by ship, or whatever.

It takes up just as much room, but it's a little easier to deal with when you have a lot of things attached to a given ship/list.

yeah, that stack of cards that is like a quarter inch thick breaks my back too.

I put my upgrades 2 at a time in a regular card sleeve, which means I usually have the equavalent to 4 cards sitting out between my pilot card and up to 6 upgrade cards. It never been a problem and is much more space efficient than a whole card sheet.

So much beef! I just played it on Squadron Benchmark against a Miranda/Dash and it took it on the chin while smiling. Then it ate their lunch.

Now try one patrol leader and 2 SKBPs with COllision Detectors. It has double the number of upgrades but the deci hits like a truck.

That made me remember the debate on the Legend of the Five Rings LCG board after FFG got the rights to it. Someone asked if there would be any/many tokens with it. So those of us who've played other FFG games said there would be. Then some people who hadn't tried to argue that there may not be any... Just because every other game ever made by FFG had a ton of them, that didn't mean L5R would have them too...

If you want to get rid of your bloat cards, msg me. I will be happy to take them off your hands. :)

I know the feeling. I went to store champs with 3 snap/juke A-Wings, an the table turned into the "how do I hold all these limes" guy. I ended up sliding chardaan and the title mostly under other cards to free up room. I did show them to my opponents first and ask if they minded

Here you go. No upgrade cards. 1 point init bid. You're welcome.
