Question(s) re: Heirs of Blood - “Blood will Tell” quest

By Garthbo, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey folks -

This is probably ancient history for most of you, but I’d appreciate your thoughts on a couple rules in the Heirs of Blood - “Blood will Tell” quest.

Mainly, I’m puzzled by the point of placing *fatigue* tokens in the Chapel. Their only purpose seems to be to place reinforcement zombies. But... the only time that’s ever going to happen is in the final couple of turns when the locked door is open & the heroes are fighting in the Chapel.

Also, I’m assuming that the zombies are stuck inside the chapel until the heroes unlock the door, right?

Lastly, why would Eliza *ever* perform a “Blood Offering” Action when she can perform a “Forbitten Incantation” Action instead? She has plenty of healing available from the Flesh Moulders so the FI is a bit of a no-brainer, right?

Thanks for any feedback!

Indeed, there is no point in placing fatigue tokens in the Chapel. However, since they can be placed anywhere on the map, why would anyone do that?

But if you do, yes, the Zombies would be stuck inside until the heroes unlock the door.

"Forbidden Incantation" is almost a no-brainer. However, Eliza might roll zero hearts (an X and a surge) with it, so if she is really close to 25 hearts near the altar (like 23 or 24), she might prefer performing "Blood Offerings" that will always provide 1 heart (and no Stun). Also, even though she can be healed, with very bad luck she might get low on life with "Forbidden Incantation", since a Stunned Master Flesh Moulder can only heal once per turn.

Just one addition here: The master Flesh Moulder always gets two heals per activation if the OL places him on the end cap with the search token. This end cap is not part of the Chapel and the master Flesh Moulder is not stunned even if Eliza rolls a surge.

Ah, right... now I feel pretty dim as I re-read the rule and see what you said - the fatigue markers can be placed *anywhere* on the board (not just the Chapel). Thanks for clarifying that!

Wow... that means the zombies will be a "harrier" force that keeps coming back. Also, fatigue makers can be placed in the path the heroes are taking, costing the heroes additional fatigue just to walk through the map. Nasty!

All good points - thanks!

Cool. Thanks for the pointer.

Man, this quest is going to be a *lot* more difficult for the heroes now... :(

Thanks again!

Is it possible for Forbidden Incantations to kill Lady Eliza Farrow?

For example, if she only has 4 health left but the roll for Forbidden Incantations is a 5, is she dead? (OL loses).

There seem to be no rules in the book on this. Am I missing something?

Yes, she would be defeated and the Heroes win.

One other note about Forbidden Incantations vs Blood Offerings. When playing this quest with fewer than 4 heroes, Lady Elizas health is significantly reduced (only 7 for a 2 hero game) making it very risky to do two consecutive Forbidden Incantations.
Additionally, the odds of rolling a surge are slightly higher than 50%, and the average number of hearts rolled is around 3. So given that it may take 2 actions to do FI, with an average gain of 3 hearts, and will reduce her healing (unless you exploit the 'in the room' rules by moving the Fleshmolder to the cap tile), its sometimes better to do the slow and steady approach using consistent BO instead of FI.
