Thank you FFG

I got my stuff. :D 2 of each expansion woo.

I'm honestly not fond of the named characters in FFG products either. I do like campaign style things for that, but I'm not at the point where I feel like actually naming my ships

On the Narrative - I'm the opposite. I feel bad every time the Yavaris takes a hit and explodes, because, well, there goes Yavaris...

Which is why I concoct my own personal name for these things... No-one cares when the Nebulon-B "Cleansing Fire" takes a few hits... Or Admiral Belaris, who once trained under Senator Bel Iblis as part of the Corellian Navy, elects to lead a force into battle... It makes more sense for me :D

This. Very this.

I first got into war gaming with Warhammer Fantasy Battles (6th ed.) and I couldn't for the life of me understand how they could let us take command of all the various special (named) characters . After all, if they did that, then they could (and probably would) die!

And then the character would be dead!!!!

It took me a while to get my head around the idea that if a character died in a game then this wouldn't mean that the character had actually died in the overall story*. However this realisation killed something for me, like the battles didn't really matter. After all, nothing was at stake. The characters didn't even 'come back', the battle just 'never really happened'.

I also came to despise the way that every battle report had to include 3+ named characters each side. On the one hand it seemed to say that each army was incapable of standing up by itself without the unique abilities of it's uber heroes to prop it up. To put it another way, the army was just a delivery system for the special characters at best, or an annoying obligation at worst (5th was particularly bad in this way).

On the other hand it just seemed odd that the Emperor Karl Franz was personally leading every. single. border skirmish.

And with like, a handful of guys each time (ran out of points to spend on actual troops after you take them obligatory 3+ special characters)

HE'S THE EMPEROR!!! WHAT'S HE DOING TURNING UP TO ANY FIGHT WITH LESS THAN 1000 MEN?!? WHY IS IT THAT EACH TIME HE HAS TROUBLE MUSTERING EVEN 50 OR SO?!?

*sigh*

Ok, rant finished.

I got over all this by never using special characters and by naming/back storying/ongoing storying all my own.

So yes. All my ships are named. And no. None of them are the ones from Cannon/Legends.

* My second thought was that a character had to die in a White Dwarf battle report to actually die. How naïve I was. Plenty bit the dust there too. With narrative and everything. But still wasn't 'official'

FFG also included a box with the Hammerheads large enough to enclose the ISD yet the ships are barely bigger than a flotilla.
