Why do you think that? I know quite some miniature wargamers that have over time collected more than one faction for the main game the play, some even have multiple factions for more than one game.

I would go as far as saying having more than one faction for a miniature wargame isn't that uncommon.

He means it isn't going to be cheap.

So? Owning 2 or more 40K armies isn't cheap either and I know people who do it.

I'm not saying everyone will own more than one faction but I wouldn't also say that most people will only collect one army.

i dont know ANY 40k players that only own 1 army, and even 1 army of 40k can cost way more than multiple armies in other games. Hell just about all of them own a model or two that probably cost as much as a full 200pt list in RWM if not more. We even have a guy with 3 Warhounds lol

I dont plan to fully purchase all 4 factions in RWM, but i plan to get at least 200pts (as in a playable showcase army using as many different units that still somewhat functions over proper lists) of each one.
Though i admit the thought of the Uthuk painting leaves me wincing. I just cant seem to get a good color scheme for those models in my head other than red skin with yellow undersides...except thats basically exactly what my Daqan use lol (red armor gold trim green cloths black leather straps/gloves) and while i dont mind sharing similar colors, thats the exact same scheme...

I mean judging from past experience with new wargames. I haven't seen a lot of people just jump full in with multiple armies when the entirety of a new game's armies hasn't even really been mapped out. It's easy to get into multiple armies in 40K (I got into at least four armies for WFB and two armies for 40K) because you know what all the options are. In RW, there's been a lot of chatter of people holding out till Latari or whatnot because they're just not into Daqan or Waiqar. Now if all the options were on the table, maybe they would choose Daqan and/or Waiqar, but right now it's easier and more cost effective to wait and see what else FFG puts out.

Personally, I bought the starter and am waiting to see how the game plays out before any other investments. I'm ready to go with Latari, but want to wait till I have a better understanding of the game. Likewise any other really cool looking army may have a waiting period for me. I know this game won't really get totally exciting until at least some time next year when there are four armies to get into. I'm betting others might see it that way as well.

Who knows, 2018 might have an army that makes me totally forget my Elf interest.

yes typically when someone is new to a wargame they may get one army, but most people I know plan a second faction pretty much as soon as they know they are staying with a game...::looks nervously at warmahordes collection:: But most people I know getting into RW are planning at least 2 armies...

That makes sense, but I'm sure we will see more people with multiple factions next year. I myself am interested in Waiqar and Uthuk.

Thanks for all the replies. It is helping me see how people spend the money and where I'm comfortable at.

To be clear... I am not really criticizing spending money on games. I'm not trying to guilt anyone here.

I certainly have spent money on games. Descent I think is my most expensive game... I had a local store with a permanent buy 2 board games get 20% off, (each) that a few years ago had a christmas take additional 50% off. I think I spent 200 on descent. Completed all expansions of that game, I had all the box sets. Just had to buy the chains of rust separately when it came out.

I'm also not trying to be competitive. Belittling or being belittled on how much one spends. Not at all my intent. People pay for hobbies and what they can afford.

Personally I don't travel, some do. Travelling can be a expense instantly over a thousand for a single trip. I would prefer to spend 1000 in equivalence on board games that I can play rest of my life. :D

In my head, it's just this new game system as I am seeing here explained. Where you focus on factions... that are not to be compared with board games. People say RWS is a cheap miniatures game I am not arguing. I was just seeking input.

Again, it was mostly just looking at the 25-35 dollar expansions where you get between 2-4 miniatures... sometimes 8?

I realize they are bigger than descents, more detailed. But also with descent you got both sides and cards... yes in this you also get cards with the 4 minis.

If this were a different game. I would buy all the factions... but that would mean just getting them together all at once. Not in small portions at this price.

I was just inquiring.

I don’t think it’s the amount of plastic or metal or rules in the purchase that matters. It is how often you play them, enjoy the painting them, or the modeling aspect.

I played Warmahordes. I bought a unit of ATGM’s back when they came out, and played them extensively for the next 10 years.

Between 2010 and 2013 I was playing over 200 games a year, so I’d guess that over the total life of the game, my unit of ATGM hit the table well over 600 times.

Pretty good for a 20 dollar purchase.

I hope with this game my Spearmen unit hit the table half as much. If they do that will be a pretty strong purchase no?

Yeah, don't feel discouraged. Most of the people here are used to the business model.

Most expansions are going to come with two trays worth of models. Whether that means 2 minis, 4 minis, or 8 depends on the unit type. The one exception is the Infantry Command Upgrade pack. It comes with 4 specialized versions of infantry that can be slotted into your other units via upgrade cards. Each figure has 3 different versions.

Me too!

@resolutestorm if you want to save money just play 100 point skirmish games. Just know that miniature games are pretty different from board games. I think you might enjoy board games more.

Nice collection, do you also play Imperial armies, I spotted 3 Knights on the top shelf of the blue storage rack.

There's a few armies in there.

  • Chaos of two flavours - Nurgle and Khorne
  • Imperial Guard
  • A Battle Company of Blood Angels
  • A Great Company of Space Wolves
  • Inquisition with Henchmen, Grey Knights and Arbites
  • Sisters of Battle
  • Orks
  • Imperial Knights
  • Tau
  • Dark Eldar
  • WHFB WHFB High Elves
  • Tomb Kings
  • Napoleonic 1812 Prussians
  • 300 or so mageknights re-based with clear bases, used in rpgs
  • Xwing - Imperial
  • Mordheim - Shadow Warriors, Reiklanders, Chaos Beastmen
  • Waiqar RWM

Who knows how much money but I can state with great confidence that the enjoyment quotient is high.

I don’t know about you, or your location, but even with a fairly high population of gamers here in Utah, I still don’t get to see everything or play all the options.

At times going to other places to play in tournaments, or in gaming groups is pretty wonderful. Gives you a different perspective and can really revitalize the game for me.
