Beginner list help

By Cryptiks, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hello everyone,

I recently tried the game out at my local store and really fell in love with the game, however being mainly an X-Wing player I have a limited budget on Imperial Assault for the time being. I am looking to play semi-competitively (my store runs a summer league, so I don't need all the maps). So far I picked up the Core set and was looking at getting some expansions to build the following list (40/40):

Jedi Luke (12)

Elite Alliance Rangers (12)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (7)

Alliance Smuggler (2)

Gideon Argus (3)

C-3PO (2)

Rebel High Command (2)

Any Thoughts? I was hoping to have a lot of firepower with focus for my Rangers, keeping Gideon and C-3PO in support, while letting Luke and Obi-Wan get in the fray.

Thanks!

Yep, that's a great first list! My list just subs Hera and Chopper in for Obiwan (he's good, but slow, which is limiting for melee). The Hunter cards that come with Jabba's Realm are awesome and would be a great boost, but they aren't essential.

Welcome to skirmish!

I'll agree with @ryanjamal on Hera. She's one of my favorite rebel figures currently and her Call the Shot gives you a lot of flexibility when attacking. Also, I think having at least 7 activations is pretty key right now. With 6, you'll run into some lineups that will give you trouble.

I'd be somewhat tempted to leave out Chopper, and maybe bring another smuggler so that I could fit in Balance of the Force. If you're missing some of the top command cards and it's not really worth it, then you can't go wrong with Chopper. You should get a some pretty useful command cards with those purchases.

Hopefully if I get more into the game I will pick that expansion, which specific cards should I possibly look at maybe borrowing? Tools for the Job and Glory of the Kill all look pretty darn good, so hopefully I can include those in my command deck! Also thanks for the advice regarding Hera, really appreciate it! :)

Well I will be looking to get Hera rather than Obi-Wan then for the list, I'm now really excited to try this list out! I was still thinking of buying Obi-Wan and Leia in the near future since they look pretty decent and are such iconic characters, Diplomatic mission also looks pretty good. Or is Obi-Wan not quite worth it anymore?

Well... Obiwan is Tier II, on his way to Tier III. I will always opt for Ahsoka over Obiwan, and she comes in the next wave. You might want to run all three if the force users get enough of a boost, but I think he'll be left behind some. Leia is Tier III simply because with 8 health she can be killed with a single attack by lots of figures (with the right cards).

As to other cards you'll want, the ones you mentioned are great. The other one you'll want is Assassinate.

Ah that makes sense, would you then recommend any specific ally and villian pack, which would allow me to mix the list around a bit, or any rebel staples? I saw the rebel saboteurs and they look insanely strong, or would saving up for Jabba's Realm be the wiser decision, so if I picked up Jabba and Greedo later I could even run a nice scum list and would get some nice cards?

TIER III already? man how the mighty have fallen. I'd hope for a little more staying power from FFG. Hopefully there are some maps that make his power useful as well (Anchorhead still made him useful as well as that one ISB map.

Hopefully some of the Force Leap cards will make him still viable. Ahsoka seems really mobile at the moment and pretty potent so I hope she'll come in at Tier 1.

My first figure pack purchases were Han, Chewie, & Leia because it's a Star Wars game and I can't not have Han, Chewie, & Leia. They weren't competitive at the time really, but they were a lot of fun against my friends. Obi falls in that same category for me.

He just seems Tier III to me now because I'll always take Ahsoka over him, and her mobility and spy trait make her so much better. I just don't know if I'll be playing both of them, so that's why he drops down so much. She's the exact same type of figure, but better, so that causes a sudden fall for dear ole Obi :-(

At least, it might. Maybe those Force User cards will make him more potent.

I think the packs you already listed are great if you want to play Rebels. Jabba's Realm would be my next purchase after that. It helps your Rebel list, and you can have a competitive Scum list straight out of that box. If you like Imperials, Terro is great, and Jabba's Realm helps a lot because you'll get jet troopers. The essential pack for Imperials is Blaise because he gets you Zillo, which is an auto include for Imperials.

But you can also buy whatever you like best. Han and/or Chewie will get their fix soon. :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out here! I now have quite a lot to think about, but I reckon I'll start with making this list and then looking to get Ashoka, I'll move onto Jabba's realm in the near future :)

And that is very interesting, are we talking of a possible Errata fix?

What they've done in the last few waves is release attachments that only work on one character. First IG-88 got an attachment in the Jawa pack that costs 0 to bring in and gives him more health and extra movement. Vader is getting a special attachment in the new Heart of the Empire expansion that costs -5 (making him a lot easier to afford) and tweaking his abilities a bit.

The same article that showed us the Vader attachment hinted that there are three iconic characters that are getting fixed to be competitive. We know that Vader is one, and a lot of people (myself included) are assuming that the other two are Han and Chewie.

Just read the article right now! I suppose since they are talking about "Iconic" characters then I'm hoping that you are right, I'm pretty sure everyone would love to run Chewie and Han so that would make sense!
