Fiber optics on the cheap?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I'm fixing to do some fiber optic accent lighting. But sourcing the materials is getting wierd.

Local model shops are awful, they don't even know what I'm talking about when I ask for it.

Online keeps leading to some sketchy websites or eBay sellers.

Anyone have a recommendation?

Does fishing line work the same way?

What's the deal on this ?

Also,I have lots of actual glass fiber optics for telecommunications networks.that might work ok

That and optical audio cables might work.

Thefiberopticstore.com

They have almost everything. I did have to buy my colored FOs from ebay though.

Fishing line won't work. FO actually has a "coating" for lack of a better word on the outside. This causes the light to reflect back into the fiber at the interface.

Try looking at a Walther's catalog. They carry everything for model trains and scenery and at one time carried FO lighting kits.

Don't know if they're still in business but search for Edmund Scientific. I bought a bunch of CROFON, a plastic FO cable, decades ago. Multiple sizes and lengths.

Telecommunication fiber is usable but is glass. Cut ends need to be polished. A propane torch will work but causes the ends to "flare" making the lights appear bigger.
