Printing alt art cards: newb question

By BoxerlessBossk, in X-Wing

As the title implies, I'm having some trouble with printing my designed alt art cards. As I've seen suggested in lots of places, I've made an Asajj Ventress card using Strange Eons and I'm attempting to print it via makeplayingcards.com. I've made sure to export the biggest size (print quality) image from Strange Eons, but makeplayingcards.com is still insisting that the resolution is a bit too low, so it cuts off the edge of the card.

What am I doing wrong here?

You may have to import the final product into Photoshop and adjust it from there. Is strange eons jpeg or png? Jpeg will never get good enough resolution if it is.

PNG. The whole point of using Strange Eons was to avoid my lack of Photoshop though..

If you need a photoshop-type app I can suggest GIMP, a free image editor with much of the functionality of PS.

A good person to ask directly would be @citruscannon .

He has recommended that site for alt art/errata cards on one of his forum topics.

For starters, make sure the actual image size is correct. The card size is 2.5" by 3.5", but the full image including bleed should be 2.74" by 3.74". Specifically 822 by 1122 pixels.

FYI, their templates can be found here: http://www.makeplayingcards.com/pops/pc-temp-guide.html

It's been a while since I've used Strange Eons, but there's a setting that lets you save the image with a bleed for printing. That makes the image larger as @hargleblarg mentions. That's possibly why the playing card site is telling you there's not enough pixels,

Always be careful using commercial industries to print images you do not own or even images you've made of IP you do not own.

A few possible points of friction here causing your error message.

  • The file you are submitting, is it definitely at DPI of 300 or greater?
  • do the dimensions of your image match the dimensions exactly, as quoted for the full bleed on MPC? Your images need to account for the bleed that they use. The very simplest way to do this is to download the MPC template for the file size you are looking for, and then overlay it on your image in Photoshop or if you need a free alternative, GIMP. You'll see what they see, basically. @hargleblarg posted this link above

This is almost certainly going to be the cause of the errors, but if you try this and nothing is working, please let me know, happy to help out on an image or two.
