Debris questions

By Slade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

We 'discovered' debris obstacles yesterday and probably got things mixed up. Searching the forums/internet I didn't find a good answer so I'm listing them here.

1. If my ship flies into a debris field I can take an action before the stress is assigned and the die is rolled?

2. If my ship is stressed, takes a green maneuver and flies into a debris field I lose the stress and gain 1 stress again + roll a die. Can I take actions?

3. If my ship (not stressed) takes a green maneuver and flies into a debris field it can take an action and rolls a die but is a stress token placed?

4. My ships (not stressed) takes a red maneuver and flies through a debris field. It cannot take an action, receives 2 stress tokens adn rolls a die?

5. My ship was stressed on a debris field. It got tractorbeamed landing again on top of the debris field. Will I receive a second stress and roll a die?

Thx. for the response.

I'd suggest rereading the rules on movement, specifically the order of the steps of activating a ship.

In short they are (absent upgrades messing with them):

1: Reveal dial

2: Execute manoeuvre

2a: Move ship

2b: Check pilot stress

2c: Clean up.

3: Perform action.

You cannot perform any actions when you're stressed. So to answer the specific questions:

1: No. The stress is assigned between 2b and 2c, and you're stressed when you get to 3.

2: No. The stress is cleared at 2b and then assigned between 2b and 2c. You're stressed when you get to 3.

3: It can't take an action, and a stress token is placed. It doesn't clear the stress from the debris, because the stress is placed after 2b Check Pilot Stress.

4: Correct.

5: Yup.

There needs to be step after 2b and before 2c. Like 2b, check pilot stress, 2c apply additional stress sources, 2d cleanup. It would make this and Lightning Reflexes (and probably others) more clear. While of course they mean to apply the stress after 2b and before 2c, I had a minor argument with someone who wanted to take "after check pilot stress" a little more liberally when using lightning reflexes so that he could still perform an action. Ormaybe say to apply the stress "after the check pilot stress stage during cleanup."

No there doesn't.

After the Check Pilot Stress step means in between 2b and 2c.

Lightning Reflexes is not compatible with the current rules. There is no fixing this. It is, however, easy enough to work out: after you execute a white or green maneuver, do a 180° and gain a stress. Any further text is a holdover from a different rules system.

A lot of the confusion with these kinds of rules comes from people misunderstanding what "check pilot stress" means. That step is NOT where you ask, "Do I have stress?" to see if you can take an action or not. The "Check Pilot Stress" step would more accurately be called the "Add/remove stress based on maneuver color step", because that's what it actually does. There is no separate step for checking whether or not you have stress; that's just baked into the rules for performing actions.
