Would you play Armada if it wasn't Star Wars?

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

I seem to be just as on my own here as I did when this question appeared on the X-wing forum. With that in mind, I must warn you all to take a deep breath and sit down before reading this next bit...

I don't like Star Wars...

THERE. I said it. I don't. I found the original movies to be fine, the prequels to be almost offensively bad, and both TFA and Rogue One to be a waste of a movie ticket. Yes, these are strong opinions, but I really don't like SW, and I catch a lot of flak for it given I play these games... (the amusing juxtaposition is one my best mates, who got me into X-wing, is such a SW fan they made a radio documentary about him).

If this game was any other IP, or was entirely original, I'd be just as likely to play it. What would have been different is that I'd have been less likely to have heard about it. That IP carries some hefty free word of mouth advertising that's hard to beat, but given my love for BF Gothic back in the day, I'm sure I would have found it eventually. If anything, I wish this system was applied to a Star Trek IP, instead of that godawful Attack Wing. So much potential there.

I will echo the same as many here. The engine is decent, but could use some improvement. If it weren't star wars I probably wouldn't have been that attracted to it in the first place. If improvements were made on the engine and their own IP was used I'd play that.

I play for the theme but I do like the game mechanics. The theme is what got me started on Armada but I stick around for both.

Its the theme for me.

I bought into WOTC Star Wars Starship battles, because of the theme, but was very much disappointed with the rule set.

Thank the stars, for FFG making a Star Wars miniture warship game that actually works.

I would in a heartbeat. I don't really star wars at all. Its alright I guess but not enough to sell me a game.

I would seriously play this game as a WWII naval combat game. Bismarck expansion? Zero fighter screens? OMG YAMATO throwing 8 reds from the front? American carrier fleets with modified Doolittle bombers?

Would play. Would murder my wallet, but would play. Would play in ADDITION to Armada.

As I've said before. I liked the look of X-Wing but didn't dive in because I was waiting to see if capital ships would be introduced. I became more intrigued as the CR90 and Raider were added but, deep down I'm sure I was wondering how the larger ships would fit in. Enter the announcement of Star Wars: Armada.

"Shut up and take my money!"

In short, theme first, the rule system is the rule system and doesn't factor into most of my purchases.

I got into the game because it is Star Wars based. At the time I was a regular Warmachine player, and had met a new girl that is a HUGE Star Wars lover and was also interested in tabletop gaming. We looked into X-Wing and Armada, started with X-Wing, and eventually picked up Armada as well.

I post in these forums, instead of the X-Wing ones, because I strongly prefer Armada's rules, and have stuck around for that reason.

So...both?

Someone did pay me for my time and effort in converting it over to a BFG Substitute, including additional rules... And that was before I was heavily invested in Armada. If anything, its application of the Ruleset was what drew me over the most - although I was distinctly looking for a "Sci Fi Large Ship with Inertia" feeling game after BFG.

Would you care to help me over at KDY? I've been trying to port Star Trek factions into the game, though it's been slow-going for lack of play-test time/additional ideas.

I definitely found the game because of Star Wars, but if I heard of another game coming out, more or less regardless of IP, using this same system, especially a 2.0 version, I would give it a very hard look. I am a Star Wars player, but as an engineer(ing student) I find the elegance of the ruleset to be impressive. (Even if, as I noted in @FoaS's thread a while back, there are a fair number of changes I would make.)

I only got into armada because I already played Xwing which I only got into or even heard about because it was Star Wars. It's possible I still might have got into Armada if Xwing never existed but it's not certain, but if it wasn't Star Wars the odds are pretty low I would ever have even noticed it.

I find most original scifi IPs have pretty hit or miss ship designs and nothing else really comes close to the Star Wars aesthetic for me, so it would be a tough sell even now that I have already been introduced to tabletop games. Most of the other games I have bought have ended up feeling way overcomplicated and and left me constantly wondering if we are even playing it right, but having Star Wars as a motivational thematic anchor has at least helped me push through it in the case of armada (also had a really nice guy who did an amazing job of playing a teaching game with me when I first bought the core set at a store).

I'd be more inclined to play a world war 2 miniatures game by ffg than a generic sci-fi game. Outside of Star Wars, I doubt I'd have much interest in a space ship game

I'm totally the opposite.

Won't touch WW2 Games, but Sci-Fi where my own stories can be made is where its at.

I mean, I'm not sure how much help I'd be, but I'd be happy to pitch in. In terms of play-testing, I barely get games of Armada in these days, nevermind variants, but I've certainly got a fairly solid knowledge of the TNG/DS9/VOY universe.

Honestly, if it didn't have star wars behind it, I don't think the article headline and caption shot would have intrigued me enough to read it, and therefore hooked me into armada... But this is my first tabletop game... Now knowing what ffg and tabletop have to offer, a non star wars ip would intrigue me enough to give it careful consideration as to whether spend money on it or not...

I would have never played X-wing or Armada if it wasn't Star Wars in all honesty. Now that I have played them I would play it for sure even if it wasnt.

Which part is it about Armada that you like the most? The Game system or the theme?

Personally I think if FFG ever came up with their own capital ship IP and launched a game with it, that I'd be on it in a heartbeat if it used this type of system.

If I am being 100% honest, it would have depended on some other factors. If it was say a Babylon 5, or Battlestar Galactic (old school, not the remake) game I would have jumped in with both feet, had it just been a generic game most likely I would not as I was coming from X-wing (can not stand that game, or more specifically the mechanics behind how it plays) and these are the only FFG games I have ever played. So with out having built up any trust that they can make fun games most likely would have passed.

I have been looking for a good "naval" game for some time and Armada has Star Wars which helped sell me and there is a local gaming community. So I tried it. The mechanics are good but honestly the theme and mechanics both work and fail with Star Wars. An ISD compared to a CR90 isn't powerful enough so if it wasn't Star Wars then that would be a benefit because 'Battleship A' vs. 'Corvette 9' are ships I don't worry about if they have the same ratio of power of an ISD and CR90. However it is Star Wars so its the ships I've been wanting to play since I was a kid and the Star Wars universe means short ranges is canonical, as opposed to playing a naval game based in the real world that is from the Russo-Japanese war and on where you have to mess the range of weapons up a lot which means ships run into each other and blah-blah-blah.

The mechanics are solid but also sometimes get in the way of themselves but overall provide something interesting that say Firestorm Armada sadly didn't have (also it has no community I know of in my area).

So it is a weird six of one, half dozen of the other.

I would be interested in certain sci-fi movie licenses, but not an original idea. I'd love if ffg did an aliens vs to predator game or something (maybe terminator). It might be that I'm too obsessed with pop culture but most games I own are either movie/tv theme or have a history feel to them (axis and allies).

Game mechanics for me, definitely. I like Star Wars alright, but I'd by no means call myself a Star Wars fan. I got into Imperial Assault because my friend group preferred the theme over Descent, and I was vaguely aware that they made other Star Wars games but didn't really care, until I happened to see a gameplay video of Armada and got super excited by the movement mechanics and everything.

That being said, a Star Wars game was a lot easier for me to get into than any of the other big space fiction universes, because I'd at least seen the movies whereas I don't know anything about the others (apart from Firefly, but that's probably not the best for a capital ship game).

A WW2 theme or similar would guarantee I'd stay far away though, so a brand new sci-fi IP would've probably been ideal for me. But Star Wars is cool, and it makes it a bit easier to try to get other people interested too.

I most likely wouldn't invest this much time and money into it, but I definitely would give it a try. If the sci-fi world it created would be intersting, I may be more heavily involved.

Nope. 100% because it's Star Wars.

I would play it. I think this system would work well for a wet navy game of some sort, or another sci-fi setting. Star Wars just entices the unwary into the fold...

If FFG could get a Star Trek license that would be absolutely ideal for something like this.

I'd even consider diving in to a new IP if they had a new futuristic setting with this engine.

couldn't care less about star wars theme, love the gameplay. i was wanting to get into BFG but it being dead and all that wasn't going to happen. Really i was just looking for a ship based tactical game. I avoided drop fleet because the mini's in that game look like **** and(as i only recently got into the game) halo fleet commands gameplay is just ****. so, here i am, enjoying this game way too much.
