QD/Tomax/OL for store champs, workable?

By Zucch10, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I've been agonizing over what to bring to my first store champ event and I think I've finally hit on something I really like. Tried something similar with backdraft and Vessery, but I didn't like the PS there as I want the SF to go first so Tomax can focus or barrel roll while still jetting out torps. Thoughts?

Quickdraw - Predator, Fire Control System, Targeting Synchronizer, Special Ops Training, Lightweight Frame

Tomax Bren - Crack Shot, Extra Munitions, Proton Torpedoes, Guidance Chips

Omega Leader - Juke, Comm Relay, Stealth Device

I think this three ship list can be very successful and honestly I don't see much wrong with your list. I would make some small changes mostly based off preference. Namely predator for expertise and remove stealth device on omega leader. I understand why you chose those 2 items. But the scenario for predator plays out like this. Quickdraw focuses for action, shoots, predators one dice, acquires a TL for to max. With expertise it plays as such: QD TLs for actions, shoots, gets full rerolls not just one dice, expertise triggers for focus, acquires TL from FCS, and Tomax uses it. I just feel for 1 more point you get full rerolls. Granted though you might not get any rerolls on a QD return fire shot that is where predator gains a small amount of ground. Stealth device may be worth it only because Tomax is clear priority number 1 target which allows the chance for OL to make it to the endgame a little higher, where he thrives. And if you can make it there with a stealth device still on, well good game. Remember though green dice are fickle.

"Quickdraw"(43) ["Quickdraw"(29), Fire Control System(2), Ion Pulse Missiles(3), Special Ops Training(0), Targeting Synchronizer(3), Lightweight Frame(2), Expertise(4)]

"Omega Leader"(26) ["Omega Leader"(21), Juke(2), Comm Relay(3)]

Tomax Bren(30) [Tomax Bren(24), Crack Shot(1), Extra Munitions(2), Plasma Torpedoes(3), Guidance Chips(0)]

Just my thoughts on this setup. The Ion missile in place of stealth device can assist in ensuring your beta strike is as mean as your alpha strike.

I'm playing synchronized Tomax for some time and he definitely works and it worth his points. My recommendation would be to look at swapping Omega Leader to Backdraft, moving targeting synchronizer there and equipping Quickdraw with Draw Their Fire. This way you're forcing targeting priority on opponent as they're forced to shoot Quickdraw first, and therefore Tomax uses both torpedoes (and Quickdraw can potentially use Backdraft target locks for her shots/double taps). However Omega Leader is a solid choice here as well.

Personally i would swap QD for Backdraft instead. Much more useful aux arc. And with VI & FCS you still get the high PS and lock for Syncronizer. Just my opinion though as i have only ever used Backdraft in an SF (Backdraft is my bro)

I did play Backdraft at worlds (with vessery as third ship) and it is a better ship overall for a long game, however Quickdraw with DTF does supply a good alpha strike, and that matters for alpha strike list. However I do prefer Backdraft to Omega leader here ;)

Essentially, Quickdraw is your Biggs (with some Dengar spliced in) and Backdraft + Bren is your main squad.

Sticking as close to your original list as possible, I would take off Stealth Device and use those 3 points to upgrade to Expertise on Quickdraw and Homing Missiles on Tomax. I see why you've gone with Predator, to make up for the target locks Tomax is using - but after he's fired off two torpedoes, it doesn't matter as much and FCS + Expertise is the much stronger combo. (Plus, if it happens that Tomax doesn't need a target lock - entirely possible, since Homing Missiles don't spend the lock - you get full mods early in the game, too.)
