Swarm Leader Chewy

By DeathToJarJar, in X-Wing Squad Lists

  • Chewbacca (TFA) (42)
    • Swarm Leader (3)
    • Recon Specialist (3)
    • Rey (2)
    • Millenium Falcon (Evade) (1)
  • Sabine Wren (TIE Fighter) (15)
    • Draw Their Fire (16)
  • Captain Rex (TIE Fighter) (14)
  • Green Squadron Pilot (A-Wing) (19)
    • Refit (-2)
    • Test Pilot (0)
    • Selflessness (1)
    • Draw Their Fire (1)

Chewy shoots with up to 5 attack dice and a focus. If the opponent shoots at Chewy, redirect the damage to Sabine / Green Squadron Pilot and mitigate the attack with Rex. If any of them explode Chewy gets extra shots. Is this workable at all? I like the idea of draw their fire / selflessness with Chewy, but maybe I'd be better off with something like Predator to make Chewy more formidable on his own and make his attack a little more consistent.

The big thing I see is by weakening the ships feeding the Swarm leader you're making it easier on your opponent to just focus on Chewy as the others will just blow up trying to mitigate. Swarm Leader really wants numbers and lots of them consistently.

Use Rey instead. Rey is good. Maybe:

Rey (58)
YT-1300 (45), Swarm Leader (3), Finn (5), Jan Ors (2), Millennium Falcon (Segnor's Loop Version) (1), Smuggling Compartment (0), Inertial Dampeners (1), Tactical Jammer (1)

Biggs Darklighter (26)
X-Wing (25), R4-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Captain Rex (16)
Sabine's TIE Fighter (14), Sabine's Masterpiece (1), Black Market Slicer Tools (1), "Chopper" (0)

You get a pretty durable Rey that's decent on her own. Biggs has tactical Jammer defense and an evade token from Jan, plus Rex's defensive ability. Rey's shot is can be up to 7 dice at range 1 with decent mods.

This is actually a bad idea. Either Biggs go down quickly or doesn't keep up maneuvering wise with the YT. And again once he goes down your really limiting the effectiveness of Swarm leader. Remember Arcs are important for a Swarm leader so if Biggs and Rex do not have Arcs, then no extra dice... this is why you want more ships not fewer with a Swarm leader. You need Arcs to get the dice along with the evades so it's a delicate balance doable but delicate.

Plus Biggs can't evade to feed Swarm Leader, unless you give him R3 astromech.

I figured since Chewy gets extra shots when they blow up drawing damage away was a good thing - but it does make him weaker end-game. Plus you can't evade and turn around. Any thoughts on using a different EPT like Predator?

Jan Ors.

I'm worried about Rey's attack mods. Is two rerolled blanks enough?

I guess it depends on your goal. Is it to use Chewy and his pilot skill a lot or trying to fly as part of a swarm? If the goal is capitalizing on his ability predator is the best option but then strip down the other ships and add more to have a higher chance to activate the ability more often.

I think Rage suits Newbacca better than Swarm Leader.

Here's a variant of "Let the Wookie Win":

YT-1300: · Chewbacca (Heroes of the Resistance) (42)
Rage (1)
· C-3PO (3)
Inspiring Recruit (1)
· Millennium Falcon (Evade) (1)
TIE Fighter: · Ahsoka Tano (17)
Veteran Instincts (1)
· Captured TIE (1)
· Sabine's Masterpiece (1)
· Kanan Jarrus (3)
TIE Fighter: · Captain Rex (14)
TIE Fighter: · Sabine Wren (15)
· A score to settle (0)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

Even without the TIEs and Kanan raging Chewbacca is a beast.

EDIT: I just had a wild idea! What if I ditch Sabine for Zeb and put Feedback Array on Ahsoka so she can deal killing blows to aces or commit suicide if need be...

Really like the idea of Rage + Recruit on Chewy. Not certain about the escort though - it seems like there's not enough to keep him alive on the initial pass. Maybe something like this?

  • Chewy (42)
    • Rage (1)
    • Recruit (1)
    • 3P0 (3)
    • Falcon (Evade) (1)
  • Arien Cracken (19)
    • Draw Their Fire (1)
  • Green Squadron Pilot (19)
    • Refit (-2)
    • A Score to Settle (0)
    • Selflessness (1)
  • Rex (14)

My version has Kanan on Ahsoka so Chewie can lose the double stress with a white move, Chewie can use his own action for evade and Ahsoka gives him Rage action at the start of combat if he has a valid target.

EDIT: Now I see what you did with Airen there... Nice touch!

Aside: HotR Chewie with Swarm Leader and a bunch of A-wings is fabulous in Epic.
