HotAC advice: Mobile T-65

Hi All,

So, I've been doing a new type of concept with my latest HotAC campaign (that's Heroes of the Aturi Cluster for those that don't know). I am sticking with an X-wing as I like the ship and want to run with it. I'm getting up there in PS and just bumped up to PS 6 last night. I'm thinking about what direction to take next and I have see 2 paths. Here's where I am now:

Starscream (PS 6)

  • Integrated Astromech, Engine Upgrade, and Shield Upgrade (also have Extra Munitions in the hangar not being used)
  • Predator and Push the Limit
  • BB-8
  • Ion Torpedo and Proton Torpedo (choose which per mission)

So far, I have really enjoyed the hyper mobility of BB-8, PTL, and Engine Upgrade. I find I don't really need to ever TL, unless I want to fire a Torpedo. I'm Squad Leader, so if I end up with an extra action, I'll try to give it to a squad mate. I'll often do a green, BR, then Focus, and then Boost or give my action to someone else. If I really want to go crazy, I can BR, Boost, then do my move, and last grab a Focus. All while not being stressed. I've found it a great ability to get out from the front of a swarm of Tie Fighters or to help maneuver around obstacles. I can also change my facing kind of nicely with a back BR, Boost, and then bank one way. Not a great turn, but it allows me to change my facing some. My options are limited to doing Green moves to get this off. It's not been too much of a problem so far, but there have been times.

Next PS level allows me to get an extra EPT. I'm torn to what to get. Here are my two options:

"Blue Ace" ability: When performing a Boost, you may use the 1 hard turn.

This was my first thought and I really like it. It would allow me to really become more mobile! I could do a Barrel Roll backwards away from things, then do a 1 hard turn and basically have me right where I was and facing a 90 degree angle. At that point, I can do a bank and be facing near backwards from where I started. Not only this, but I could also just BR and grab a Focus...then do my green move and BR after. Same idea, but timing can bring me somewhere different.

Sabine Wren's ability: Immediately before you reveal your maneuver, you may perform a free Boost or Barrel Roll action.

I was looking through all the different abilities to find something interesting and I found this. Yes, it's pretty much the same ability as what I get from BB-8. Why would I want it? Well.....what if I REPLACED BB-8 with just an R2 Astromech? Hear me out.....Sabine ability would let me do a free BR for ANY move I do, not just a green one. I mean, I could BR and then do a K-turn! Or....Boost and do a 2 hard turn. Now, why R2 Astromech? To get more Green moves. All 1's and 2's would be green, including a 2 hard turn. This is important for the PTL combo. I could BR backwards and grab a Focus, then I could do a 2 hard green to clear stress, and then Boost backwards (well, the way I was facing away from). I think that this would make me even more mobile than I am now. It would allow for me to do a Boost or a Barrel Roll. There are times that I can't do the Barrel Roll due to stuff around me or where Tie Fighters land. So....this could be a lot better depending on the situation. You know how crowded HotAC tables could get. Of course, the next EPT that I get would almost have to be "Blue Ace"'s ability as it would just be super cool to BR bacwards, do a 1 hard turn, and then do a 2 hard green to do a 180! Oh, and still get my Focus!

Thoughts? Go for the cool 1 hard turn now? Or go for the ability to do 1 hard Boosts when I need to?

Well, seeing as your paragraph describing the Sabine option is twice as long as the one describing Blue Ace, I think I can tell where your heart as at. ;) You just want a little validation is all. So here you go:

I was thinking of Sabine for my X-Wing HOTAC build as well. Sabine and Jess's pilot abilities mixed with R2D2 and shield upgrades.

I'm torn.

I was following this exact path when we played HotAC. I had a T70 with R2D2 and Pred + PTL + Blue (and I was planning on adding Sabine, except I never made it to a high enough PS before we finished). It made me remarkably agile and survivable but I still lagged behind my buddies. What I found was I couldn't score the damage and kills to rack up points (we weren't using XP point pools).

Another EPT for you to consider is Jake Farrell's ability, it works really well for hyper mobility.

I'm currently flying an ARC170 in Stefan's BattleStar Pallas campaign and decided to focus on damage output. I currently have the renewable crackshot + Title + Tailgunner and am racking up points like crazy.

That's why I'm torn. My heart lies with the hyper mobility builds but the damage build is getting me the points.

Sabine + Blue would be crazy good. Hard one boost followed by 4k = super sloop. Hard one boost, 2 speed turn, barrel roll back = nearly a 180 spin in place.

Jake + Intensity. Focus action, boost/BR, evade token.

You can't do the same action twice in a turn.

I wouldn't want to do this as Jess' ability wants you close to people, but Sabine's ability moves you away.

Well, we aren't doing anything but the standard game, so no T-70's or such. Just base ships. I'm not having a hard time doing damage. I've got Predator to give me the re-rolls and with PTL to give me a Focus, I find that I'm doing really well for damage. I like PTL with BB-8 to then clear the stress I just gain. Just last night we played "Nobody's Home" where you ambush the Imperials. We had 4 players and I was at 15 XP and shy of top guy by just 1 XP. I think I killed 5 Tie Fighters and a Tie Phantom in that game! Oh, and I did most of the damage on the Shuttle. I popped out early when everyone said I was going to die as they all went for me, but I was able to BR to the side and Boost to be out of their arcs and just wailed on people.

Oh, pooling XP is a must for this game. The creator wants to change it in his next version to the standard way to play. Or he told us in his interview we did.

Farrell's is OK, but since I'm clearing stress by just doing the Greens after I gain the stress, I'm OK. I find I'd rather have other EPT's than his.

I keep thinking about a HWK with Moldy Crow, Esege's ability, and probably Jan Ors would be really good to assist everyone and to get a pile of XP for helping people. Garven Dries and Jess can't hurt, either. Maybe Recon Spec instead of Jan Ors. Tough choice.

Yeah, I think I'm leaning towards taking Sabine's ability now and if we ever get further, I'll go with Blue Ace's ability.

I'd rather have Blue Ace's ability than Hera's. I mean, Hera's is great when I don't know where things are going to be, but for the most part, you can guess where the enemy ships will land. I haven't had too much of a problem with it. I like the ability to turn around 180 in one round, with no stress,...and still have a Focus results much better.

Each to his own. I personally think the ability to change your move is worth it weight in gold.

The other option is Hobbie, PTL, Targeting Astro and Stay on Target. Which is just hilarious. ?

Mine is now PS 8, and I haven't a clue what else to add. What can you suggest? Miranda? Regen is very helpful in HotAC.

I loved my 1-turn-boosts on the A-Wing. Solid choice in any case. Allows you 180 degree turns without K-Turn.

I found this after searching in Facebook for Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. It's got 1400 or so members. I think this is it.

I like these mobility Elite Pilot Talent options, but it's hard to get away from Predator + Expertise.

Keyan Farlander so you can use the PTL stress as a focus token and have one more action to do something different instead, e.g. give a squadmate an action via squad leader or do barrel roll/boost adjustments, given you have vectored thrusters/engine upgrade.

Outmaneuver for a cheap version of Wedge Antilles, given you can reposition you should be able to get out of arc of someone.

Don't think of Sabine's ability as "move you away" think rather of adjust your angle. I usually run BB-8 because I want to keep the Elite slot for damage adjustments, but I use the bb-8 barrel roll in planning ahead for the move, then you can still end up in range 1 of your squadmates just with a good angle on the TIEs.

I second the pooling XP, we only play it this way since I heard of it, it is so much better, there is more cooperation and helping instead of ruthlessly trying to get the kill for more points.

What I can recommend as well : Ban predator as an elite pilot talent, instead get automatically predator vs. an enemy type that you killed at least 5 times, but only reroll 1 die regardless of enemy PS. Everyone pretty much gets the reroll against TIEs soon enough, but people could try to specialize vs. other types.
