Speculation on new Astromech in Havoc Expansion

By EdgeOfDreams, in X-Wing

Since the Havoc preview, people have mostly been talking about the pilots, upgrades, and dial that were revealed. I haven't seen anyone talking about what the new Salvaged Astromech upgrade could be.

Here's what we know:

  • It's unique (has the dot next to its name, and it would be silly to put a generic in this pack because the Havoc can't equip generic Salvaged Astromechs).
  • The name starts with "R4-".
  • The image appears to have a red and white flower-pot headed astromech with C-3P0 in the background and something in a brown robe in the foreground (a jawa? Uncle Lars?).
  • That image seems to match up with the astromech in A New Hope that Lars almost bought from the Jawas. That astromech blew up (ostensibly because it was sabotaged by R2-D2 according to some EU content), but certainly could have been repaired or, you know, "salvaged". However, canonically that astromech was named R5-D4 ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R5-D4 ). Could the name on this card be a mistake? Or is it supposed to be a different droid from the lore?
  • The Havoc is a heavily bomb-themed expansion. We already have one bomb-themed astromech that pairs well with Havoc ("Genius"), but this new one could be another bomb-themed astromech. On the other hand, it could also interact with missiles or turrets, or be a defensive or mobility-based ability.

So, given all that, what do you think it could do? What are you hoping for?

Personally, I'd love to see something that gives us another interesting way to make use of bombs, especially if it gives us a reason to fly Bomb Loadout Y-Wings.

I would say it most certainly will have something to do with bombs since it comes with a bomber and both Nym abilities deal with bombs. Luke's Uncles name is Uncle Owen. His last name is Lars but it took me a second to figure out who you were talking about lol

I think it'll let you throw bombs from front guides

My best guess is BoShek's buddy:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R4-E1

he might even fill a similar role!

Prequels, but this guy is scum:

This one's a stretch:

Man I hope it's not this one!

Maybe they'll canonize LEGO?

Different R4, but I wish this guy would show up finally:

the Imperials need a droid too!

Curse you! Ninja'ed again...

So what would BoShek's droid do? When you bump an enemy ship you may drop a bomb using your front guides?

Scum Only. R4-BS any bomb or mine within range 1-3 detonates. 1 ship within range one of bomb or mine is dealt 1 face up damage card. Cost 1 point

No, come on man... R4-BS is non-unique, free, and says that you don't have to discard munitions when you fire them. Then FFG says it was accidental that Jumpmasters got another insane boost! :)

I think you'll be right that it'll be bomb-related, unfortunately.

Kinda funny: The Scurrg was a bomber, but also one heavily armed in frontal firepower. The K-wing was bristling with ordinance, with a super-special dedicated bombing mechanic.

Observe which one got 'ace' abilities, and which one got bomber specialist skills...

I'd hoped for a fighting Scurrg, but it's clear that the 3 attack, multiple secondary weapons options, and even the freakin' turret, are practically afterthoughts on this one.

I had a weird feeling that something wasn't quite right there. Thanks for correcting my derp.

Like Deathrain? I think that would be cool, but I don't know if FFG would so directly replicate a pilot ability like that. Letting Sol Sixa drop things out the front with 1-hards could be hilarious, though.

That looks and sounds right to me.

Yeah, that's a good point. With Captain Nym being in two factions, it would have been a perfect opportunity to make one of them the bomber (probably the Scum version) and the other more of an ace (probably the Rebel version). As it is now, Rebel Nym is just a worse version of Scum Nym, IMHO.

I think Rebel Nym is the better of the two because the evade part of Scum Nym is way to situational to rely on. They are both useful though so they may see a good bit of play.

You could drop the evade part of Scum Nym's ability entirely and I'd still think he was the better choice. The combo with VI, "Genius", and Bomblet Generator on him is just so much ace hate in a bottle, for a fairly reasonable price.

They are certainly different play styles but I really like the area denial aspect of Rebel Nym. You can drop an Ion bomb in a corner and that corner is effectively off limits to any large ship or they fly off the board. Being able to drop a bomblet every turn and then decide which of the two is going to stick around is also great area denial.

Fair points. I hadn't considered the implications with Ion Bomb before. Played that way, Rebel Nym is much more positional than Scum Nym. Not sure it'll be enough to win games, but I guess it depends on what else you're pairing him with that can take advantage of the area denial.

Scum also has lots of bombers available to it. Being able to fart out the odd 'risky' bomb, and then if the enemy outflies it, you can keep it around to ruin their attack approaches - in case they flew just a little bit short, or the like, and now they've got severely limited options for the next turn.

Scum Nym works well with Genius, sure... but both sides could field Genius already. Rebel version is the more exciting, but honestly I'd have been thrilled if it was the new Bomb system card, letting almost any list take it. All power considerations aside, it's just so cool .

So, assuming this thing works with bombs somehow, what are the broad possibilities for what it could do? I'm ignoring cost, balance, triggers, or frequency of use here and just trying to list as many ideas as I can.

  • Change the AoE radius of a dial bomb
  • Deploy bombs with a different template (banks?) or in a different direction (out the front, out the sides)
  • Prevent a bomb from detonating
  • Provide a free action to drop a bomb with
  • Provide a free action before/after dropping a bomb
  • Move a bomb after it's deployed
  • Add a bomb slot to your ship
  • Prevent a bomb card from being discarded when you use it or give you a way to recover discarded bombs
  • Prevent a bomb token from being removed from the board when it detonates
  • Make a bomb do more damage
  • Make a bomb give out an additional effect besides damage (ion, stress, etc.)
  • Change when a bomb can be dropped, such as letting you drop a bomb in the combat phase
  • Change a bomb's detonation timing/trigger
  • Move a bomb token after it's on the board
  • Protect you from friendly bombs
  • Protect you from enemy bombs
  • Let you shoot down enemy bombs

Did I miss anything?

Other wacky idea: what if the Droid is also dual faction like Nym? "You may equip this upgrade in a <astromech> or <salvaged astromech> slot."
