L5R Universe

By Mig el Pig, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Just noticed, quite sure it wasnt like this yesterday, but:

In the products tab of the site L5R became it's own Universe next to Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Andriod, Runebound and Arkham.

A sign they will be announcing other games in this setting in the near future?

Edited by Mig el Pig

I'm relatively certain they'll at least release the RPG.

In addition, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they release a few board games as well.

They bought the entire IP of L5R, after all. It cost them a ton of money. There's no way they don't exercise that property to the extent of their imagination.

I expect to be playing L5R FFG games for at least the next 10 years :).

A quote from their purchase announcement:

Quote

In addition to the new incarnation of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG as a LCG, we are excited to explore new possiblities for Legend of the Five Rings in the roleplaying space. At the current time, we don't have many details about this, but we will reveal more as the details become clear.

I want Magistrates of The Emerald Empire, either as the RPG, or a Adventure Cooperative Living Card Game, Arkham LCG style.
To be honest, I like the Arkham Experience so much I wish it spawned ACLCG genre...

Arkham LCG is itself a reinventing of Lord of the Rings LCG. Where Arkham is stronger from a narrative perspective, LotR LCG has much stronger card play. If FFG did make another co-op LCG, a better hybrid of the two would be nice.

Well as they can't make Relic or fury of Dracula anymore with the lost the GW license I would like to see some L5R games take their place. A adventure game with the champions would be cool.

I would do anything for a Legend of the Five Rings board game with a focus on miniatures, it doesn't have to be full on Warhammer-esque scale, but getting to manuever cavalry, infantry, archers, and hidden movement ninjas would be great.

I'd buy an L5R reskin of Descent/Imperial Assault in a heartbeat. Somehow faster (probably involving time travel) if it had a skirmish option.

It can be Warhammer-esque.....as long as the miniatures come colored and assembled!

I don't want to adventure with champions. I would rather prefer lower-level personalities who aren't so high in the hierarchy.

As for LotR - I haven't played it, but I heard it was more of a engine building game than a adventure game per se, and that challenge mainly laid in reshaping your decks from the scratch to brace the next scenario? I like Arkham for it's "almost-RPGness", deck evolution and focus on playing the scenarios instead of deckbuilding for them. I would love to see a Magistrates of Emerald Empire games in similar vein.

But in general, I desperately want other entries from the universe - be it card games, board games, video games, comicbooks or lore books - to explore avenues OTHER than clan on clan warfare and high champion politics. It's my least favorite element of L5R (lol, I know) and I wish the more personal, smaller scale action got some love too.

Yeah Arkham was more rpg-esque where LotR was much more "build a deck for this quest and no other" and you would always be challenged to rebuild from scratch for each one.

I would love an L5R game that had a co-operative feel to it, where you were all rivals trying to accomplish the same task. So if there is an Oni, it isn't that you all work together to kill the only, but that you want to be the one that kills it first! A sort of competitive slash co-op is missing from my game line up.

Oh hell yes, I would love a legend of the five rings adventure/story card game. Rokugan is too cool of a place to experience just in the broad strokes of the 2 clans battling each other. Could you just imagine exploring the City of Lies or Toshi Ranbo over a series of 6 adventures Arkham Horror style? A story driven game like L5R could unfold in a way completely new from AEG's L5R.

I'd prefer to have something not-card based.

Other products I want in L5R besides the RPG

  • Risk style boardgame
  • Art Book(s)
  • Novels (Robert Denton's novel maybe?)
  • Elemental Dice (who knows)
  • Lore Book
  • Scarfs

They've said they bought L5R with the intent to do more than just a card game.

Though I think the more notable aspect of this is that we're finally getting front shelf advertising instead of being relegated to the 'Other Games' section.

Agreed; it doesn't have to be like Star Trek where members of the bridge crew are on every away team. You have lower totem pole men and women specifically so you can delegate responsibilities and focus more on leading your clan.

Or meditating on top of the world.

What I would like beside the RPG (obviously) :

  • Novels -- ffg published ANR Books, that wasn't my thing. L5R novels otoh... :D
  • Strategy Board Game -- I have a true love story with boardgame featuring map and evolving frontiers.
  • Skirmishes Figurine Game -- Prepainted figurine would be great since I don't have any patience for this kind of thing. xD
  • Ways to show our allegiance -- T-shirt with our clan mon...

It would be nice for the Art of War board game to become a reality.

I just want to know if they going to bring back Legend of the Burning Sands at some point and if it would be compatible wit L5R. I am not holding my breath, but I expect at least a RPG book, hopefully.

If you're referring to the setting itself, they've said that they would like to explore regions of the world beyond Rokugan, and I could easily see multiple cultures showing up in RPG books. If you're simply curious whether a hypothetical Legend of the Burning Sands LCG will be compatible with the Legend of the Five Rings LCG, I find that highly unlikely as the concept of honor is built into the core fabric of the new L5R, and is something alien (not to mention pointless from a divinity standpoint) to anyone who isn't Rokugani.

Mr Denton is currently involved with the Radiant: Offline Battle Arena card game that is going to hit Kickstarter later this year (and looks fantastic - check it out on Facebook!), so I'm not sure if he'll be involved with FFG and L5R at this time. This is a shame, as I've always greatly enjoyed his writing.

If you like them, I can see if the knitter is taking additional commissions.
