Destiny RPG format

By Alphastealer, in Star Wars: Destiny

I am keen to try a Destiny RPG format and would like some input as to ideas and viability.

Currently the Awakenings set provides the best launch platform as the starting points are equal.

The idea is for a player to select hero or villian.

They then build a tri colour starting roster of generic characters from awakenings.

For hero that is: 1x Rebel Trooper, 1x Padawan and 1x Hired Gun (24pts)

For villian that is: 1x Storm trooper, 1x nightsister, 1x tusken raider (24pts)

Each player then is allocated a starting pool of resources to purchase cards for their 30 card deck, for example 40 resources.

They then select cards for their deck that do not exceed 40 resources when added together. No more than 10 cards be chosen from a single color.

For each game there are objective milestones...similar to the pre-release activities for SoR; things like: deal 6 or more damage in a single action; have more than 5 resources at any point in the game...etc.

Each of these objectives allows player to accumulate points to use to purchase benefits for future games.

These benefits can be :

1) Purchasing additional characters to rotate;

2) Allowing a unique character;

3) Allowing unique upgrades and supports;

4) Increasing the base resource balance to purchase better cards;

5) Increasing the character cap from 24pts up to a max of 30pts.

The possible downside to this is that it requires players to have the generic characters and a decent selection of cards at low resource cost.

Obviously this needs to be fleshed out a lot more, but what are your thoughts on the concept?

I like what you have so far, it certainly has the creative juices flowing!

I guess from the title and before I read your post, I thought of something different, more along the lines of an Old School Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior. You start with one character (generic I think would be best) and maybe 1 Upgrade (cost of zero or 1). You would need some sort of DM/GM, but I think you could do a cool "story" where you put up low level (other generic characters to defeat.) You would have some sort of system where you get XP or Resources to "buy" other upgrades or cards that you just use as a "power" (events) during an encounter, maybe each card can only be used once, and you have only have so many of your powers limited by hand size. Maybe that starts at like just 1 or 2. But your hand size can be something else you can "upgrade" to have more "slots" (events, supports, etc.).

I know this is not exactly what you were thinking, but I certainly think you could have some fun with this!

Great idea!

It would also be really cool if all the players were on the same team, and shared the same deck, playing all their hands open-handed and deciding as a group what to do for each action. Each player could add five-ten cards to the deck and be allowed to trade those cards for other better ones when they gain XP.

Then the DM could build a squad for the players to play against and build up a storyline and a campaign.

To make it have more of a story, it might be nice to come up with custom cards (like alt-art stormtroopers that look like real stormtroopers, etc.)

Check out the Star Wars RPG that FFG makes. You could EASILY bring in Destiny, X-wing, Rebel Assault, and/or Armada into that system.

Hi, I have done a little testing and the following seems to be a good start point for those keen to try a RPG Destiny league.

Step 1: Each player picks hero or villian.

Step 2: Hero characters are Rebel trooper, Padawan and Hired Gun - Villian characters are First order storm trooper, Nightsister and Tusken Raider. (24 points per side and one of each colour) Thereafter players can build character groupings up to 30pts.

Cards can be used from both Awakenings and SoR. For players with limited access to cards allow for alternative non-unique characters but still keeping to one of each colour.

Step 3: Each player is assigned 15 resources to build a 30 card deck. The cost of each card in the deck is its resource cost. This means you will start with a number of zero cost cards. The following restrictions apply:

- No legendary cards; - No more than 6 rare cards; No more than 10 cards of a single colour; (any battlefield may be chosen)

Step 4: Play up to 3 league games per week against different opponents.

A win gives the player 5 resources, a draw 3 resources and a loss 2 resources.

Players can bank up to a max of 4 resources in each game by accumulating them and then placing them outside the game area without spending them.

Each week a player can score a once-off bonus 6 resources if they achieve that week's special condition.

These conditions include: Win a game by Milling your opponent; Cause 7 or more damage in a single action; Bank 4 resources and still win the game; Win a game without losing a character; Roll 5 or more blank dice in a single roll; Perform 3 or more actions in a row; Cancel 7 or more damage in a single action; Heal 5 or more damage in a game;

The organiser will need to choose a special condition for that week.

Step 5: After each game players can use their available resources to buy new cards for their deck, new characters or unlock certain restrictions.

Characters are bought at the base point cost of that character, for elite pay the extra to elite cost (but not at the same time) You need to own a unique character for 1 game before you upgrade them.

Non-unique characters can be bought at 50% of their points cost, rounded up.

To increase limits the following cost apply:

Increase rare card allowance: 1 resources per card

Increase legendary card allowance: 2 resources per card

Increase card colour allowance per deck: 2 resources per 5 card increment

Additional battlefield - 2 resource cost

General notes:

No elite characters or legendary cards in first week of play;

Unique characters that are defeated must skip the following game - skip 2 games if they are elite unique characters;

All cards bought are available each game

Try the above for a 4 weeks.

The winner of the league will be the player with the highest number of unspent resources at the end of 4 weeks.

You can have a winner for Hero and Villian if that is preferred.

Please try the above in your groups and let us know how it goes.

After a bit of testing with helpful opponents on TTS, I suggest starting with 20 resources and 10 rare cards.
