The P51 X-wing

By Keenergames, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

So I decided to try my hand at painting one of my ships, using the P51 Mustang as inspiration. I was hoping it would turn out well enough to paint all my xwing using various P51 paint schemes. It turns out stripes are hard to paint. How do you folks get such straight lines on these small models?! Anyways, what do you all think?

For super straight lines I use a very thin painter's tape (Tamiya Brand). But, for the most part, it's just a matter of bracing one hand against the other, against a knee, on a desk and slowly drawing the brush across the model in a smooth stroke.

As someone who absolutely adores the P-51, I greatly approve of the design. Nice work overall!

When stripes don't turn out as straight as expected the first time around, its usually possible to correct it with the contrasting color (as long as the paint stays thin enough of course).

Looks great! I'm impressed!

For a long time, the P-51D was my favourite aircraft. I think the paintjob works great on the X-Wing. If you have a look on the Red and Gold Squadron helmets it's obvious that the model makers used similar sources for their original designs...

You know, I really feel someone should do an X-Wing custom paintjob with the D-Day invasion wing stripes.

Nicely done!

One small suggestion. IMHO the blue should be replaced with black. The blue/red combo seems off to me. Paint the cockpit glass with silver or gold and glaze with blue or green inks.

To cut very thin tape strips I use a 'balsa stripper'. Can't remember the manufacturer but it's designed to cut thin strips of balsa wood. The device holds a #11 blade in an adjustable carriage with a 32 tpi screw. (IIRC) Lay some tape on a piece of glass, adjust the cutting width and slide the gizmo along the tape. Bingo, you have a very thin slice of tape! If you're using other than tape meant for modelling use, discard the first strip. Some commercial painter's tape have a fuzzy edge. Not noticeable on home projects but very evident on small models.

Hope this helps.

Went looking for the mfg. Amazon carries a similar product! Should be easy to pick one up.

Additional information

It's really nice painting, but it could do with a wash, something to give it a bit of depth - even a coat of very thin black ink would do wonders for it.

I did a Tuskegee Red Tails X-Wing about a month back, so it seems appropriate to add here.

While it certainly is good advice to go slowly and carefully, I find that for fine, straight lines if I do them quickly I can make them smoother
