General Discussion: State of Destiny Suggestions to Tournament Play.

By GeneralGames, in Star Wars: Destiny

at its current speed i don't think best of 3 would have time issues but if it slows down too much we will be back to awakenings issues.

The speed isnt as much the issue as the non interaction is. being able to tie rolling and resolving together being the big one. That eliminates the potentional to interact and makes the game more variable as it comes down to did you roll well the first time rather than crafting the rolls

possible fixes are when you activate a character you have to pass any bonus actions and making maz 1 of her own dice only meaning she can still focus but leaves the window to interact etc. I think you will find then that the game will move more towards building up a pool to make removal harder rather than having these titan character snook their good rolls away before you even have a chance to deal with it.

obviously this is a quick idea and doesnt take into account things like hit and run and fn etc but it could be the basis for returning counterplay to the game that isnt kill them faster

Best of three has a time issue because you may finish your game in two passes and then have nothing to do while other people finish their third game. Given too that a 2-0 win will be better than a 2-1 win you haven't fixed the problem of variance in any case. Destiny is doing quite well because it slots in those mid-week slots that are a problem for longer games. I am also of the opinion that because the games are fun and fast you have more people just play on even though their day at the tournament is done.

If you are going to play more games, just make it simple and play more games against more opponents. Play 6 rounds rather than 4 for example, maybe because of playing more games you can now lose one or two and still remain in the hunt for the cut or prizes.

My friends and I have long played our games as you bring what you bring. I feel this creates a very strong meta, and one that you can take far more advantage of if you read into it all correctly. If you are going to play against fast hands and force speed then maybe you should have your Upgrade Removal cards in your deck to begin with.

How has your players responded while you tested the proposed changes?

Best of three is essential for competition, it makes it to were the game is not decided on a lucky role, If the wait bothers someone they got some patient issues. It's life sometimes you gotta wait, bring a 3ds, listen to music, playtest with other ppl that is done, ect

So we play 4 rounds, and you win 2-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-1 and another player makes the cut with 1-2, 2-1, 2-1, 2-0 I am no closer to believing that there wasn't some magical lucky dice roll perhaps. The only difference is a single game result where he won a 2-0 and you lost a single game in a 2-1. In terms of time those 4 games will take in excess of 4 hours and achieves very little in the way of improving results. Actually with fewer results I think you have done something that increases the "luck factor" not diminished it.

If you played 7 games and then took the results you would have spent about the same time playing games, with far less downtime for those that finish early, and have a fairly reliable cut to top 4/8 in a 16-32 player tournament.

More games removes the statistical bubbles, not just more games against the same opponent. Swiss Seeding generally works when you play 2 more rounds than you need for a DE, so 9 rounds of Swiss will cope with 2^(9-2) 128 players. That would take about 6-7 hours which would compare to 6 rounds best of 3, 2^(6-2) or 16 players. The results are however no longer W/L so you may push that out to 24 or so, but here you are putting far more risk of having a "lucky" game affect the results. I would also suggest that it gets worse if you fail to finish games because of the time allocated to play 3 games.

As for grabbing a 3DS, reading a book or listening to a CD, I would just point out that I signed up for a Destiny tournament with the idea of playing games of Destiny. These activities are not that, these are activities I can do elsewhere. Don't tell me to go to a Destiny tournament and do something else because I can't play Destiny, that is really not worthy of any further comment.
