Looking for group to start a PBP

By PShannahan0413, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello Folks! I'm a GM, looking to start a Force and Destiny PbP as my group in real life meets so irregularly I'm a bit starved for Star Wars Adventures. This would be the first PbP I've run, but I've been GMing an EotE group for over a year now, and before that I was an active participant in an online, literary RP community. The adventure/campaign I've got in mind is a horror mystery story, something I haven't tried with my EotE group so here's hoping for the best.

The group I'm looking for is four to six players, FaD careers only (at least for starting out) but any species from all the books. Players would be rookie force sensitives, beginner level, fleeing to the outer rim to escape the tightening grasp of the empire. Other than FaD careers and beginner characters, the only other stipulation for the group is that ideally, I'd like the group resource to be a mentor. Having a shared mentor gives everyone a reason to work together, but I can work around the other resources if the group would prefer. Otherwise all beginner level character creation options are available.

As stated, this would be the first PbP I've run, so I don't know the best site for players to create characters or roll dice. If anyone has suggestions please share them for all.

Posting schedule is open to be determined, though I work a 9-5 (so to speak) and would have limited ability to respond during the work week.

That's all I can think of for now. If anyone has questions, please ask and I will respond when I can.

Something I really like the idea of is a hybrid live over voice chat/ pbp. Discord has a really nice swrpg server that has rollers and other nice toys.

I like pbp for the in charter exposition, and story telling, live for running combat and chases, lots of immediate excitement and drama.

An idea I put up on a discord server was:

"Game idea if any GMs are interested. High xp/quick advancement campaign hybrid pbp/voice... Voice for the epic battles. Stylistically Dune-esque, nowheresville planet becomes ground zero for an epic war/ political intrigue mostly F&D, I'm thinking time lapse, so like a group of sessions separated by years, with big xp rewards ao going from starting character to hundreds of xp any takers?

Maybe do an alternate version of star wars after the clone wars, cloning is banned, droids are restricted, technology has regressed, the empire never formed, but the republic fell apart leaving the galaxy in a feudal mess of warlords and territories, Palpatine has founded a sith religious order bent on unifying the galaxy under it's tyranny"

Not exactly what you have in mind but perhaps not so far away?

Anyways, let me know what you think, and if you download discord which is free, I'll send you an invite to a wonderful star wars rpg server.

I'd be interested to play in your PBP, tho I could not do a chat/live portion. Having a full-time job, a kid, and an IRL weekly ttrpg group meet-up eliminates that possibility for me.

Also, might I point out the following dedicated PBP site that has the infrastructure to fully support FFG Star Wars, including an in-post dice roller, in-forum character sheets, and dedicated sub-forums for ppls games (allowing as many threads as you want to support the game, no toes to be tread upon in sight, unlike non-dedicated PbP forums):

http://gamersplane.com/

As a GM it makes it so much easier to run the game on a site like GP with everything in one spot, as opposed to a forum like FFGs that is not made for it.

I would love to join a game. I am about to start one on gamersplane but would like to be a player for once.

Apologies for typos and any curtness. Typing this on my phone during my lunch at work.

@TheShard I'm not opposed to a hybrid voice/PbP game, but I do have concerns about getting everyone together for any action where people would need to be voiced. While easier than gathering everyone in one place it still depends on player availability which is always affected by work/life commitments.

As for the alternate universe idea, I do love a good parallel reality, but this adventure won't be large enough in scope (at least in the beginning) that details of the galactic background will be important.

I will check out discord though as I am open to running this adventure on a separate site, and if you get enough players for your feudal galaxy then I could probably be persuaded to GM if you need one. Cool? :)

@emsquared and @JinFaram , glad to see some folks are interested. I'm open to running the adventure on a separate site like gamersplane and will check it out but before a decision is made I'd like to see who else might be interested in joining and what their preferences would be.

For now, do you guys have any questions? As I stated in my initial post, other than careers, character creation is pretty open. And while I don't want to say to much about the adventure, it will be a mystery, with PCs trying to unravel the truth of strange events happening in a remote mining colony.

That's all I can type for now. Probably won't get another post in till super late tonight or early tomorrow morning but I'll try to keep an eye on the thread in the mean time.

Well I'm gonna go gather players, what's your availability, time zone etc? I'm est.

Do you envision combat being a large portion of play (or rather; how large)?

How do you plan on doing xp?

In regards to availability, I'm in EST and work a (roughly) 9 to 5 job not counting my commute. Ergo, most nights I would not be able to respond till later in the evening, making things a little slower.

@emsquared Fair question about combat and XP

While constant battle and action are not the driving force behind this adventure, there will be a fair amount of fighting as the forces of the dark side align against the PCs to stop them. In short, I don't want to say yes there will be a lot of fighting...but it probably wouldn't hurt to have a combat skill. Does that answer help at all?

As for XP, my plan is to award small chunks as players uncover clues, face down the sinister forces, unravel the mystery and advance the plot. Then at the conclusion of the adventure (as long as they're still among the living) award a larger chunk of XP to advance players further in case they want to continue on.

So, did this die before it even got started or...?

If you're wanting more players, just start up the campaign on Gamers Plane and you'll have to fight the list of potential players off with a stick.

Orokos.com is excellent for PBP games. Every roll is time stamped and should be linked to both character and game for easy reference, the bbcode also copies nicely into these forums:

Initiative on the prowl : 1eA+2eP+1eB 4 successes, 3 advantage
a-s.png p-s-s.png p-a-a.png b-s-a.png

For online character sheets swsheets.com is excellent. It doesn't have auto fill for talents etc but does calculate skill dice pools for easy reference.

Fair warning, I've never played in a PbP, (or a FaD game for that matter), but if this is still on the table, and you folks need another gun (or lightsaber) hand, I'd like to join.

You could always start or join a game on www.roleplayinggames.net - it has its own dice roller for SWR, and you can create and edit your own board. Highly recommend it: been running my own campaign there for about a year and a half.

@PShannahan0413 , I might be interested in joining, if you're still planning this.

By the way, how do you plan to handle conflict/morality?

I will play as well. Just let me know.

Anyone who wants to play FFG Star Wars via PbP should check out Gamers Plane ...

Two people from these forums went there a few days ago looking for a game, there were none with openings, but after expressing their interest (along with a couple other community members) a long time forum member stepped up and just started one cuz ppl asked.

Its a fantastic community, not to mention it has an in-post dice roller and in-forum character sheets for this system.

I just went over and signed in last night. But I only saw one Star Wars game. I checked back this morning and now that one is gone too.

Curious about PbP. How is the potential for cheating handled? Does the GM do all the rolling, is there some technological solution that can note re-rolls, or is typically just a trust based system?

The website has a built in roller, yes edits are noted, and there is also orokos which logs all rolls

If this game is still looking for players, I'd be interested (though in a couple weeks I will have very limited availability for a week). Otherwise, I guess I will go look for a game.

First, check your Game filters. You're probably filtering out Full Games and games with Inactive GMs.

Im currently running one game, and playing in two others. I just checked and there are currently 10 (TEN) FFG SWRPG Games going.

Like I said, there were no games with openings. So if you don't (un)filter properly you're not gonna see them.

And as there probably are currently no games with openings, I would recommend a.) GMing one, b.) making a post on the Games Tavern to try to attract a GM or c.) just become a part of the community and wait until one starts up. Which seems to happen about every month or two.

If you didn't know this about PbP, it requires patience and commitment.

The games I was already involved in didn't show up for me, as I am already involved in them. Edited number of games.

Yeesh, why'd you guys make yet another PBP forum?

We should be joining forces (communities) instead of continuing to diffuse further and further.

Gamers Plane has been around for years:

Large, established, active community.

Sub-forums dedicated to your campaign.

In-forum SWRPG character sheets.

In-POST SWRPG dice roller.

All accesible within a click or two of your post. Manage your game all in one site - no go here for this, there for that.

Currently 11 active SWRPG games, with a new one coming down the pipes (or so says the rumor mill).

Whats not to love?

I do like GamersPlane, though I've found an active group on Discord, which facilitates more responsive game play via the phone app.
