Yay Uthuk Yllan

By taylorcowbell, in Runewars Miniatures Game

i just see them taking a venomous snake and petrifying it straight and fangs bared.....

In Conan Tulsa Doom shot a snake turned into an arrow. Poisoning its target and when pulled out it turned back to a snake

yup and that fits right into the goofiness I was talking about

You need to release the hounds with bees in their mouths so that whenever they bark they shoot bees at you.

I really like the Uthuk models, except for the Spined Tresher, can't really say why and I don't really like the colour scheme.

Seems to me it's time to get the core box now and the Uthuk for christmas.

The Spined Thresher model isn't the greatest (something about the face just looks so static), but it's grown to be the most-anticipated unit for me. Despite the looks of the model, I can't wait to field those guys in battle! If I get one Uthuk Y'llan Army Expansion and two Spined Threshers Unit Expansions, I should be able to do a 6-tray unit with Ravos as a figure upgrade!

I agree with the color scheme. I'm going to go for yellow on the belly and blend it into the red, giving it more of a fiery, burning look. I think it will look a lot better than the purple. I also want to do a different color with the tongues, but I'm not sure what, yet.

EDIT: Speaking of the expansion, I've got my fingers crossed that the alternate model looks very dynamic.

I wonder how much of my dislike of those models is from the (awful) stock paint scheme. Kind of mad max warboys meets red/purple alien...

Seriously. Ravos paint as Immortan Joe. C'mon and dream.

I am debating on paint jobs as Inreally don't like that combo. I want to figure out a black/stone with green hellfire pattern if possible.

I had to look at that guy a few times to figure out what's going on with his anatomy.

To be fair, that IS probably what looking at a demon should do.

I wont disagree with that.

At first I thought it was like a hydra, where the claws were mouths. Once I realized there was a head (kinda camouflaged in the shoulders) in there I did feel slightly disappointed. Like my initial (mistaken) impression of the model was sooooo much cooler than the more conventional anatomy they used.

Ok, it might already be canonical but still.

i think its the belly size to me.

They have a huge gut which to me looks kinda off for the rest of the body.

I don't mind that it has a head. Looking at the artwork on the unit card and cover art for the expansion box, I love this creature! But the way the head was sculpted in the model looks too much like a human head with monster makeup on to add funny jowls hanging down the side and an extended shield-like forehead.

As said I can't really say why I don't like it and I'm sure even in a colour scheme I like it wouldn't be a model I would be on the aesthetics alone. For me the model + it's colour scheme look like some cheap toy you could be in toy store in the past.

But I agree that a more dynamic pose would help the model.

I feel like I'm the only person who likes the look of the Thresher.

Yeah, the paint jobs on ALL the Uthuk studio units are... surprisingly simple, but the design is genius, IMO.

Maybe it's because I still remember and long for the days of yore in 40k, when the setting still knew how to have fun with itself, that the ridiculous nature of the sculpt appeals to me.

1: "So, it's a big, fat, fleshy demonic pseudo-crab-monster."

2: "But what does it DO?"

1: "Well I mean... it eats stuff..."

2: "Okay so... it's gonna have these big claws with slavering mouths in them."

1: "It's got a tail."

2: "Obviously, it has a mouth on the end of the tail, too."

I think several people have mentioned that the design and concept art are fantastic, but the transition to a 3D model left something to be desired.

I like the model but I agree the concept art is better. The same was true for the Scions imo. Instead of vines for arms they just have these giant fat fingers.

Honestly though skinny parts are probably hard to do in production so I'd guess that's the reason.

im all for removing really thin protrusions.

Spearmen alone are enough of a hassle to not bend them. Which i resently had something sit on them in the box since i dont have proper storage yet so theyre all bet and im miffed lol (painted already)

I even like the model itself. It's the paint job that leaves me kind of disappointed.

I can't wait to see what I can do with the figure as-is.

You can still heat/unbend spears after they are painted.

Not worth it unless the spears are truly awful, then appear to revert regardless.

PVC plastic has a "memory" to it, particularly if not heated all the way through. While the hot water method works, you need to be sure to submerge it enough, or simply use a heat gun (my preferred method).

When bending the spears back, don't just straighten them into the ideal position, because they will "relax" somewhat toward their previous bend. If you over-correct in the opposite direction of the bend, they will "relax" into a straightened position, and over time that will become their memory alignment.

I understand all of this, they still went back ?. For the rank and file, they really are not worth the time. They WILL bend.

Mine reverted too far! It's like they're impossibly straight now... I keep trying to get them to bend again, but they just keep straightening out.

The Uthuk command pack miniatures look interesting.

wow this faction will be super easy to paint. Think I may go with them for brute force + having a painted army on the table to attract new players.

I gotta say I'm worried about power creep.

I'm sooooo wrong. Power creep implies that the increase in power is subtle. Ravos is ridiculous.
