No action betwene declaring zone and declaring attackers!?

By Mathulus, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

I noticed that the turn sequence digram in the FAQ is the same as the old one, in that the first action window in the battlefield phase comes after attackers and the attacked zone has been declared. I am asuming, as the FAQ overrides the rules and nate awnsers, that the game is now played that way.

Whats your take on this? Is it as intended or did they forget?

I'm wondering the same thing.

I'm also wondering if they're making this up as they go along.

Go with what the FAQ says.

I think thats a bit harsh and an insult to the designers of the game.

There is no action phase between declaring the zone to attack and attackers, the reasoning follows something along the lines of simplifying/streamlining the combat process, avoiding cases where people are declaring a zone, using effects to inflict damage during combat, or other effects that must be done during combat, and then not declaring any attackers. Since there are still multiple opportunities to take actions prior to combat that will prevent an attacker from being able to be declared, this particular one is not overwhelmingly necessary, and seemed to bog games down a bit (especially when playing with or against a Chaos Corruption or Empire Mobility deck).

"If the active player declares no
attackers, both players still have the
opportunity to take actions during the
Battlefield Phase." quote faq pg 10

So you still can play actions during the battlefield phase even if there is no battling. What i have used that action window to do is corupting attackers before they are declared, with the help of shrine to nurgle. But since the nurgle shrine dosen't work that way anymore, it wuld not work anyways.

But knowing which zone the opponent will attack before hindering possible attackers is helpful. And it feels more natural to do battle related stuff in the battlefield phase (I'm sure i will miss a lot of possible attacker corruptin from now on). I want a step 0. action window for the battlefield phase lengua.gif

I just thought of an other thing. If my oppnent do not declare any attackers, then i can still declare defenders? (lets say the defender has "scout"). It shuld work.

It shouldn't and it doesn't. Combat is initiated by declaring the zone you are going to attack. If there is no such declaration there is no combat so no opportunity to declare defenders.

If you wish to corrupt a potential attacker you must do so prior to combat beginning... it appears your best opportunity to do so is when your opponent is wrapping up his Capital phase. Once the phase ends and Battlefield begins the active player gets first action which could be declaring which zone they are going to attack, followed by declaring which units are participating.

I mean if the player declares a zone and 0 attackers. The rules allow for that by the use of "(if any)".

The second part i know, but that doesn't mean I won't miss it. :P

The new timing structure you technically declare your attackers and decide which zone you are going to attack. There is nothing indicating that you can declare an attack with 0 attackers. With no attackers participating you couldn't declare a zone to be attacked and as such could not continue through the rest of the combat steps because the first one could not be successfully resolved.

So how do we use Franz's Decree now? As an action at the end of your opponents Capital phase? That's a bit inelegant and I think the original Battlefield phase had a better sequence. Also, it weakens FD a little since the "surprise" element goes away.

EDIT: Apparently the FAQ is wrong... there is an official response to this in the other thread.

And the pendulum keeps swinging. gran_risa.gif

I'm glad to hear it. I was getting ready to quit playing Chaos all together... though with the Toughness verdict I'm probably only going to go for Dwarf and Dark Elf.

Meh, my chaos will still rule over the dwarves. gran_risa.gif (I'm not so sure about dark elf though)

Can you link it? I can't find it..
