Post FAQ - best place to put your commander?

By Ophion, in Star Wars: Armada

Now he or she can't hide on a nice safe flotilla, where is the best place for your commander to sit now?

I find my small ships usually have dangerous utility roles - too expensive to have hiding in the backline but too easy to kill when they commit. So I'm finding them gravitating to whatever is the biggest, best protected ship I am running on the assumption that it will only go down if I am losing anyway....

Thoughts?

In any support ship or the toughest ship in the fleet. A support ship could be in that ship trailing behind the fleet with the purpose of transfering shieldpower or just put the commander on your biggest most resilient ship.

I never put the commander on Flotillas before the rules change, using 20-25p for just running away seemed pointless to me. It is easy enough to protect at least one ship form overextended harm throughout a battle, but I never run straight at my opponent and never have the intent to fight everyone of their ships, just enough to win... usually by concentrating on the objective of the battle.

I lifeboated, but the Gozanti still went into battle. My store championship list had Motti on a comms net Gozanti cruiser as support for one of my ISD1s (yes, that's right, one of).

Goes on Jaina's Light or a Raider or Arq.

I would put commanders on flotillas, but like Destraa, I rolled them right in with the fleet. Black dice flak is too helpful to not take advantage of.

Now, probably the toughest ship or the one doing the flanking. Though I do like baiting people by putting a commander on a Pelta. You make sure they need to fly through everything to get to it.

My Commander will stay on my MC80, where they belong..... I mean saying "Its a Trap" from a small ship, just doesn't work....... plus it makes for a giant juicy pickle that my opponent just has to go after, and now it my trap to spring.....

We're he has always been, the biggest ship in the fleet, or one of them if multiples.

The commander should always be on the largest ship (or highest point total). I wish they would have added this as a rule with the errata.

Why? If you want to have your commander on an easily killed hammerhead instead of an MC80, why does it HAVE to be on the one with the highest point total?

Because commanders usually are on the highest value ship, not some scrub destroyer trying to hide from the fight.

Admonition.

Get closer, I dare you.

I was thinking of a case where I have Leia on the Jainas Light, but I have a Pelta that contributes and costs like 10ish points more. My commander values mobility in their ability to strike... But I've never been a fan of lifeboats. I can see the argument for an MC80 as opposed to a hammerhead with Ackbar, but I don't like being told where I HAVE to place my commander.

This is a game though. And doing that would make Most Wanted even more OP. Just pick the largest ship which also happens to have your commander on it.

Then make it the largest base ship. If you multiple ships with the same size base, then you choose.

Most fleets will also develop a rhythm where one ship is frequently safer than the others. That's where your commander goes.

If you're just plopping your commander down on a random ship, then you probably haven't thought carefully enough about how your fleet flies.

I don't think they will ever force a player to put their commander on a specific ship. They need to make sure the game mechanics work instead of making the game based on lore.

It's a game based on Star Wars so the theme should be the primary aspect. Just my two cents, everyone is entitled to have their own of course and I respect the opinions of all including those that disagree. I learn a lot thru these conversations and sometime do change my mind based on the argument so just wanted to say thanks to those that are chatting back.

I fail to see how this would ruin game mechanics.

Because every decision you make building a fleet revolves around where your commander is forced to go rather than building ships for a certain task.

FFG needs to focus on game mechanics first. Lore and flavor are secondary because they are trying to sell a game that has a Star Wars skin on it. If the game sucks because it has bad mechanics, it doesn't matter how much Star Wars you pour into it. The game won't sell. Star Wars Starship Battles is an example. I played that game and it was absolutely terrible. Cool Star Wars skin with all sorts of ships, but the rules sucked.

Remember when everyone had to put their commander on a non flotilla ship pre wave 3?

So because you cant tuck your admiral away on a safe ship its now that the rules suck? This is about creating an actual task force which has your largest base ship in the center with your commander with all your other ships having their jobs to do. Nothing changes in that aspect.

I never said they were safe. I just drop them on a fast ship, typically TRC Jaina's Light, which is the best flagship hands down, or on a Needa TRC Arq. Both stay at long range and deal damage. But they are not engaging at close range.

I get the command effect whether it's on the largest ship or the smallest. But putting all your points on 1 ship is a great way to lose. Not only will you lose your center point, but you lose your commander which means the rest of your ships are weaker. By splitting the attacks, either against the large threat or against my commander, I am able to keep one or both alive. Why would you give your opponent 1 ship to focus all their attacks on? The only ship I'm ever wary about engaging head on is an Ackbar80 supported by Comms Net.

Most importantly, I like to build fleets how ever I want. I don't want a few people who wants immersion over mechanics to ruin the game for me.

How about you don't worry about telling people how to play?

This is about playing a game however I see fit according to existing rules. I won't be forced to put a commander anywhere.
