A nice way to offer to help?

By Estarriol, in X-Wing

So, I went to an SC yesterday. To put it politely, it wasn't well run. My favourite line from the weekend was about 30 minutes into the final "oh, you guys have started? What's the round length?". In fairness I must say that the organiser was not an x-wing player

I swore on the train home I'd never attend another event there, but after sleeping on it, they have some great players who go there and it'd be a shame to boycott it completely. Adding it to my own lackluster performance of late I was thinking about offering to help TO it, but wondered about the best way of broaching the subject...

Just that; if someone running the event is not used to X-wing, the offer of someone to TO who does know the rules should be pretty well recieved provided it's made politely. If part of the problem was (a) not knowing the rules and (b) trying to 'part time' TO whilst running the rest of the store activity, I know most places I know would happily snap up a volunteer assistant.

Hopefully they are aware by using their own eyes and ears that it wasn't perfect.

In which case someone who plays the game and offers helps should be gratefully and warmly received. Be cool about it and I'm sure they'll be cool too.

Basically, be polite, ask about whether you can help out and run the tournament on their behalf. Don't point out mistakes they made as a lead up to your offer - you're liable to trigger a human nature styled response! Be a familiar face and helpful to the other players.
