Store Champ Breakdown #2: Triple Defenders

By Tbetts94, in X-Wing Battle Reports

My last Store Champ Breakdown was about my Top 4 run at GMI Games with Dengar/Tel. That Store Championship's goal was to prove that the Jumpmaster is broken. Which it did confirm it to me. I did not do a breakdown of my 2nd Store Champ because that one's goal was for me to run Fenn, Dengar, & Inaldra and learn to beat it.

This Store Championship was run by my local store, SoCal Games & Comics. 44 players, 5 rounds, Top 8 Cut.

I hadn't run Triple Defenders since late November/December. I ran them so much I simply got bored. This Store Champ goal was to prove that they are still very good after the nerf.

My List:

Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7
Colonel Vessery + Juke + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II + TIE/x7
Countess Ryad + Push the Limit + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II + TIE/x7
(100)

1st Round: Isaac F.

Glaive Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts + TIE/x7
Colonel Vessery + Veteran Instincts + TIE/x7
Glaive Squadron Pilot + Veteran Instincts + TIE/x7
(100)

He also had Triple Defenders... However, he had VI on all three which was his downfall. He was upset with dice, but really going back what won me the game was getting him blocked numerous times and him having to split fire. Felt I did a pretty good job of making him split the fire too. Won 100-28

2nd Round: Cody "Joe Desmond Slayer" S.

Biggs Darklighter + M9-G8 + Integrated Astromech
Zeb Orrelios + Phantom
Chopper + Twin Laser Turret + Tactical Jammer + Recon Specialist + Finn + Fire-Control System + Ghost
(100)

What won me the game was the first exchange. I got a lucky direct hit through and forced Biggs to pop M9-G8 super early. I kept constantly forcing him to switch targets making his FCS TLT's not hit at all. Won 100-0

3rd Round: Kari K.

Colonel Vessery + TIE/x7 + Swarm Leader
Countess Ryad + Push the Limit+ TIE/x7 + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II
Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7
(100)

Kari and I meet again! Kari is such a great guy! He also ran Triple Defenders... Swarm Leader version though. This match will be up on YouTube. May want to skip the first 20 minutes though. He won Initiative Roll and took it which was huge. Means he can block and also use his evades on offense. So count the dice swings! (0-1 for Kari). First engagement finally happens after me trying to force him through the rocks but Kari being smarter than that. I get lucky and my Vessery survives on 1 health which shouldn't happen with his Swarm Leader and I kill his Vessery! Dice swing count! (1-1) This set him back big time! I was able to kill his Delta while he killed Vessery. So my Ryad and Delta versus his Ryad. I get a Range 1 shot on his Ryad after a sweet block by my Delta, his Ryad has 4 hit points left. Could put her close too death. I roll Crit, Blank, Blank, Blank, Target Lock the Blanks, 3 blanks again... Dice swing count! (1-2) His Ryad escapes disaster and kills my Delta with a missed block of mine. 20 minutes of Ryads K-turning ensues... Final Salvo!! I win it 2 hits to 1. Dice swing count! (2-2) Game was probably overall boring to be honest but Kari and I still had a great time!

4th Round: Dee "Greedy Dragon" Y.

Braylen Stramm + Gunner + R3-A2 + Alliance Overhaul
Jess Pava + R2-D6 + Pattern Analyzer
Captain Rex
Biggs Darklighter + R4-D6 + Integrated Astromech
(100)

Dee was running Rebel Junkyard. I never played against the list before. Since I hadn't run Defenders in a long time I had no game plan for the stresshog really. I said screw it let's joust. End result, I killed Biggs and Rex which was more anyone else killed in Swiss versus Dee I think. I'll take that. More wanted to not show any tricks to him in case we met in the cut. Lost 40-100

5th Round: Dustin R.

Warden Squadron Pilot + Autoblaster Turret + Extra Munitions + Bombardier + Cluster Mines + Conner Net + Advanced SLAM
Warden Squadron Pilot + Autoblaster Turret + Extra Munitions + Sabine Wren + Cluster Mines + Conner Net + Advanced SLAM
Gold Squadron Pilot + BTL-A4 Y-Wing + R3-A2 + Dorsal Turret
(100)

I was really afraid of his list, but the Stresshog had Dorsal instead of TLT which made the first engagement range key. I had the engagement anyone could had ever dreamed of! I split Ryad off and tried to get him to commit to her or Vessery/Delta. He committed to Vessery/Delta, Ryad was just in Range of the Sabine K-Wing when she sneaked through the rocks, Vessery and the Delta were also just in Range. Really nice shots took it down to 1 health. That was pretty much game there. Y-Wing could only put 1 stress on because of Range 3 and the Delta was free to block. Killed the Warden, killed the Y-Wing quick, especially with a Cluster mine drop hitting his own Y. Then he just called it once he saw the writing was on the wall. Great guy though! He said he had some personal problems too that was effecting him. I wish him the best! (100-0)

End of Swiss: 4-1, 4th in Swiss.

Top 8: Mitchell H.

Backdraft + Push the Limit + Advanced Sensors + Special Ops Training + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II

Omega Leader + Juke + Comm Relay
Quickdraw + Expertise + Fire-Control System + Pattern Analyzer + Special Ops Training + Lightweight Frame
(100)

Mitch started playing in January and this was his first ever super successful tournament. Super happy for him! He had Backdraft, QuickDraw, Omega Leader. Dice weren't doing me any favors. I had to always spend Focus and Evade for the first shot and still take 1. I hunted down his Omega Leader and had modified shots against him and got him down quick but a clutch triple Evade roll saved him. **** Omega Leader! So anyways, I figured like in Kari's game the dice will even out by the end of the game and as long as I stick to the game plan I'm fine. I kill Omega Leader finally, but then I made the first and last mistake of the tournament really, I mixed up my Vessery and Ryad, causing a bump. QuickDraw gets a Range 1 shot at Ryad and just gets 4 hits through. It set me back big time. I managed to still maintain a win condition, needing certain little outcomes to go my way and they just didn't happen. Mitch played great! Kept the foot on the throat even when I tried to breath a little.

Top 8 Overall finish. Not bad at all. I felt like I accomplished my goal once again! Tomorrow I'll go through and edit this with links, lists, and such. Thanks for reading!

Round 3 Match is up on YouTube!

Thanks for sharing your report. I have been trying triple defenders lately too. I just need to determine whether to run triple tie/D or tie/x7.

I like using both. Now, that's mostly because I only have 1 copy of Imperial Veterans, so I kind of have to innovate. Here's what I've had decent success with:

2x Delta Sq. Pilot (Tractor Beam, TIE/D, Twin Ion Engine Mk. II)
Maarek Stele (Lone Wolf, TIE/x7, Twin Ion Engine Mk. II)
100 points

I don't think it's necessarily stronger than @Tbetts94's squad, but I've had way more wins than losses. Gets hard-countered by Decimators, but everything else suffers from the TIE/D attack. Wish I had enough points for Ion Cannons, but T-beams do work on most squads. And Maarek's ability is a hoot!

I'm biased to X/7, but Tie/D may be good with Nym now out. Throw him on a rock or Ion him would kill him pretty fast.
