While I disagree with you about Rogue One, I agree completely about Godzilla. Such a bad film!

I really liked Rogue One! I thought it was a really good movie, and I think it's possibly the best Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back (Episode VI had another Death Star blow up at the end, so unimaginative. Not as cringeworthy as the Death Star III...) I really liked the characters and plot line, I think it gave a lot of background to the original movie (although I don't like thinking of Star Wars as some weird cult classic where everything's just a spinoff/rehashing of the old movie.)

My only two complaints about Rogue One:

CGI Tarkin: don't know why, but this freaked me out. There's enough skilled older bit-actors with strong cheek bones who would've been happy to play the Empire's third most memorable villain. Good actors can do amazing things, and makeup is so good these days. Look at how similar the two Obi-Wans are!

No real Beach Troopers: although the Star Wars fan half of my personality loved the part of the movie with the Beach Troopers, the LEGO fan half of my personality threw up at this part of the movie. There should've been at least one Stormtrooper wearing his helmet and a 1920's-style swimsuit while sitting in a jacuzzi drinking a bloody Mary. Is one half-second Easter egg too much to ask, Disney?!?

Can't you see what white knighting for the movie is doing to you, turn away from the sjw style of argument.

My list is ESB > Rotj > RO > ANH > RotS > TCW > TPM > TFA. The classics were amazing - and I'd be down for a modern remake provided the story itself remained identical. I despised TFA for the most predictable plot I've seen in a movie, Rogue One on the other hand, while mildly predictable (there really is a precedent for every space battle...), was a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

I watched it in cinemas four times - once for the whole thing, again to share my excitement with friends, a third time for the space battle and the fourth time for Vader. My big complaint is that the first half of the movie is purely wind up for the climax, but the same goes in various degrees for the whole franchise.

Having every named character that wasn't in a previous film dying was a fun change, too.

Actually, with all I heard what was considered (way more Vader, more banter, less deaths etc) and what was proposed by some fans I honestly think we got just about the best version of a Star Wars War movie one could hope for.

Agreed. I've yet to see a star wars movie I couldn't find something to like in (Duel of the Fates, Battle of Coruscant) but I rarely find a film I can't poke plot-holes in either.

Rogue One was a very enjoyable film to me. More importantly, it did something that the previous prequel films didn't - make the experience of watching the original better.

Watch Rogue One and A New Hope in one sitting and it actually makes A New Hope (to me) more enjoyable to watch.

The "everyone dies at the end" is a shame but retroactively inserting characters would have been an issue; because the whole point was "leia has the plans and needs to get them to the rebel base", and everyone with her gets killed or captured in scene 1 of A new hope, you don't have much space to insert recognisable characters in (I thought Tarkin was pretty well done) or expand 'background' characters from the original.

A fair few people complained about the use of CGI for Tarkin, which is fair enough - personally I didn't find it distracting, in fact I pretty much cheered when he was revealed. I thought the actual use of Tarkin was fantastic - he's depicted as a shrewd manipulator and utterly ruthless, which as you say adds to the story in A New Hope.

Bail Organa making a return following the prequels was good, and it set up Leia's mission to find Obi Wan and the destruction of Alderaan. Mon Mothma didn't get a lot of screen time, but it was good to see her at the Rebel base. And of course the Battle of Scarif - and the use of archive Rebel pilot footage - was inspired.

Exactly. You can argue about special effects till the cows come home; but the point is it makes the story make sense.

We 'know' tarkin is clearly in command by ANH, but we get to see the story mostly be about Krennic. Which is easier and introduces an interesting new character.

We get to see him take command, and in a way that underscores that he is a very smart, very ruthless (but still extremely polite about it*) commander, just as he is in Rebels. Using him is good. Over-using him would have felt like someone was going

* He does, after all, publicly apologise...right before screwing Krennic over.

I agree that Rogue One is the best film made since the original trilogy and I'm old enough to remember watching RoTJ at the cinema as a wee nipper.

For me the order is:

Empire Strikes Back

A New Hope

Return of the Jedi

Rogue One

The prequels can go in any order for me as I struggle to rate any of them as films (there's probably about 15 mins in each of them worthy of the name).

That said I have to admit that Star Wars is best watched when young and I can understand people leaning towards the prequels if they have grown up with them.

For me, Roque One is just brutal war movie in SW world

Even if you're "good", you have to do bad things to other people, 'cause this is war and this is what you do to win and survive

But I can't say that I like hammering ISD...

And movie say to us that Imperium lost war 'cause Darth Vader was lazy, couldn't make quicker moves to kill last Rebel soldier in corridor before he give DS plans to his fellow

Best since ESB for me. My personal order goes: ESB > SW > RO > RotJ > TFA > RotS > AotC.

But it's not perfect. Far from it.

Effects-wise it was good, though CGI Leia really, really creeped me out (CGI Tarkin was fine). I really liked the re-use of the Gold & Red Leaders.

The beginning was choppy, slow, and suffered from generally poor characterization. Heck, some of the bit characters were better developed than Jyn. (who got more characterization from the "I Rebel" deleted scene than the entire first half of the movie). Heck, the villains were better characterized than the heroes. I personally also think they needed an opening crawl, needed to explain locations so they didn't have to label them, and should have done the parents scene in flashback or not at all. The Saw bits needed reworking, too.

Last third of the movie compensates really well for the flaws of the first two-thirds, though.

I have a feeling Rogue One will be my favorite of the first 6 Disney movies (depending what they choose for the 3rd spinoff). TFA is my least favorite film, and young han solo isn't doing much for me right now. Remains to be seen how 8 & 9 fare.

I really feel they should focus more on spin offs like rogue one. Keeping the saga films going beyond 9 is pretty meh to me. And while "young" single character films could be interesting, I feel stand alone films have a lot more to work with. There's literally endless possibilities they could do with them.

For example a battle of Jakku movie would be really awesome I think.

I agree with all of this, but I think filmmakers can do better than the battle of Jakku for a spinoff, at least for the first few. For one, the originl Thrawn trilogy would be fantastic, as would a Rogue Squadron movie, also perhaps based on the awesome books.

The original trilogy ships, settings and characters are what interest me. Not necessarily the core characters of Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia etc, but seeing the Rebel crew at Yavin, the OT Stormtroopers, TIEs, X-Wings, Y-Wings etc put Rogue One in a class above for me.

Now if only we could see Bossk or IG-88 in action. That would be something to see with modern special and practical effects.

SW, ESB, and RO are on the same tier. Cassian and Jyn were bland, but everyone else was great.

RotJ is on a slightly lesser but still great tier. Ewoks and too much Jabba's Palace.

TFA I'd probably rank on par with RotJ, maybe slightly lower. I really like the new cast, but Starkiller base is shoehorned in out of nowhere halfway through it. Rathtars should have been a practical effect like the Rancor, not some generic 2015 CGI garbage. Snoke is a dumb name for a Star Wars character, especially an evil one and he looked like something out of I Am Legend. General Hux and Captain Phasma are cardboard cut out, underdeveloped Nazis.

As much as I can point to the flaws in in TFA, I still love the movie.

Prequels are utter trash.

Jabba's palace was fine until Lucas began his incessant tinkering. Once the CGI dance number was added... dear God. It was good to see the galaxy's scum & villany together, and get a resolution to Han's smuggling days.

ESB benefits with a more colourful cloud city and a non-hideous emperor. The others are ruined.

Rouge One lived up to all my expectations. I was worried before it was released when I heard Disney Ordered extensive re-shoots of the film. However, after having seen it in theaters and of course now owning the blue-ray and having watched it numerous times, I am glad that Disney did whatever they did. If this is the kind of quality we can see in the stand alone films going forward I'm very excited for what else Disney has for us in the future.
